Best way to protect myself and the GF when police are useless?

Long story short, gf's psycho ex-boyfriend (previously together for 6 years) called her from a payphone and threatened my life if we didn't stop seeing each other. She says she knows him well and he's dangerous (he's a big fat guy, probably has about 80 lbs on me). I told her to call the police and tell her family, but in China the police are worse than useless, and her family doesn't think she should be in a relationship anyway. Any ideas? I would get a knife, but they're highly illegal in China.

Yes, they are. The flip side of that is I'm sure he doesn't have a gun, but I'd be more worried about knives anyway. If you're going to carry a knife on one day to go stab somebody, you'd never get caught, but if you were to carry one daily to protect yourself, you'll get it caught at a metal detector/x-ray booth or something. For Chinese people it would mean prison, for me I'd get deported.

I don't know what I would do if I were you. I suppose if I thought my family was in imminent danger and the cops refused to help, I would give serious consideration to finding him first somewhere alone, late at night, and addressing the situation once and for all with a baseball bat. Not that I am in any way recommending you do that.

I think that I have established myself as the type who really, really don't believe in using violence to solve problems.

that said, in this, specific, situation - a knife isn't going to do you any good. a solid piece of wood will. go find him and beat the crap out of him. waiting for him to find you isn't giong to help.

^ I was going to say a club of some sort should be very effective against a knife (and easily obtainable), if you see him coming. Of course, nothing is effective if you don't see them coming...

^Globetrotter: I don't think going to beat the crap out of him is going to help any. But if you do, you'd better put him out of commission! Retaliation is for sure!

Does he know where you live or where she lives? That's a big question. If he knows where you live and he's actually a psycho, you need to watch your back. I don't think he would do anything to the girl though, but Chinese are known to be wife beaters. This is what I would do if I were in your shoes if what you have said is true. Try not to go out at night with just your gf, have a group of people. He's less likely to act if you are with other folks. Also if you are really worried, hire some body. People will do anything in China if you give them any amount of money. As far as weapon is concerned, I don't know if you can still buy butterfly knives. They used to be popular when I lived in China and I always carried one with me just incase.

Is mace or pepper spray legal? Do you know how to defend yourself? Can you get someone to threaten him? What are his weaknesses? Can you get him to take himself out of the picture somehow?

This girl is a weakness for him, so he has weaknesses. How do you play off them and take advantage of them?

A kuboton is the best you can do. Batons and tasers are illegal in China (though available if you ask around in the Silk Street market in the basement or an army surplus store).
