NYC for NYE

Heading to Manhattan for New Year's Eve. Do we have any recommendations? Budget is sub-$500, if possible. Possibly Dec. 29 to Jan 2.

I know it's a tourist trap, but I figure it's something I have to do once in a lifetime. The company will be good too.

First of all, hotel prices are killing me! I guess I should have booked sooner. Maybe I'll sublet off a place on CL or something.

Secondly, what are some NYE party suggestions? I would not be opposed at all to a black tie event.

Thank you in advance!

There are a bunch of different experiences you can have for NYE in NYC. I think you should narrow down what you want and maybe we can come up with some suggestions. You can go from a dive to white tie.

If you insist on staying in Manhattan you will get killed by the hotel price.

Thanksgiving to New Years is a peak time for tourists in NYC, so you might have a hard time finding a cheap hotel room. But NYC is a tourist trap? Not really, unless you want to be trapped. There have been a number of good "I'm going to New York, give me advice" threads that should have some good advice, even if not NYE specific.

My wife and I frequently visit the city.

Best advice we have, which may not be applicable in this particular circumstance, is to stay outside the city. And best time is to be had by just wondering around with no specific agenda.

Look into nightclubs and lounges throwing parties. I did that a few years ago when planning a trip with some friends. Trip never worked out but there a lot of opportunities out there.

If you're looking to go to a nightclub or lounge be prepared to pay $100-$275 a ticket, that's if you can get in. With most of the hot spots if you don't have a table then you're SOL. Last time, I was in NYC on a regular uneventful night, the table minimum was 2 bottles ($1100-$1200)...

well I live in the city, and while there are a lot of terrible areas, if you know where to go you won't see a tourist.

$500 and you say "we" as in a couple? That includes hotel, MTA and cab fares, food, entertainment and booze? I think you might have to scale back your expectations, I would have an impossible time doing a black tie /upscale NYE in Cleveland on that budget. Why not just find a local pub out there? I'd suspect you'd need to triple that budget for an "upscale" evening -- $250 for a hotel, $100-200 for a nice bistro dinner, etc. etc.

Oh, I meant $500 each, maybe 4 people now. Also, I've been to NYC as a tourist before. I just mean New Year's Eve is a tourist trap in Times Square. Black tie was a suggestion. I think I just want some place without a manic crowd where drinks will be spilled on you. I want to be able to have conversations. The day will probably be taken up with shopping/sightseeing. It's the NYE party I'm unfamiliar with.

Ok, $500 each can definitely do nightclub in nyc. However like mentioned above it can get seriously expensive... check websites like urbandaddy and concierge for ideas.

NYE parties are incredibly expensive. Check out the New York Pass for a pretty big discount on attractions. https://www.newyorkpass.com/index.asp Also, check out this thread I made less than a week ago, with the same question: http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=153209

Is your budget perperson per day?

Paying $$$$ to get in to a club on NYE in NYC is a ridiculous idea. Those of us that live here might pay good money for an excellent dinner and a great bottle of champagne but are certainly not going to make some dive-bar club owner rich. The midtown-ish clubs will be packed with posers, good luck getting an overpriced drink and lord help you if you get conned in to bottle service. Have an early dinner 5/6ish, hit the local bars and wander around until it hits 12...the whole city is a party anyway. 12 - 1 people will be flocking back to wherever they are from and you can have your run of the city until the sun comes up. Hotel prices are insane this close to the holidays....check Expedia etc. but $250 sounds cheap for NYC NYE standards, but the economy the way it is, who knows.

Are there any nice restaurants where you can eat a late meal as it hits midnight? If so, that would be my choice. You have good company, after all, and it would allow you to spend more on dinner while spending less on entertainment for the evening.
