Stan Getz

I used to dislike Stan Getz...he seemed boring. I've only recently begun listening to him in earnest and I have to say that his tone is striking. It's so warm. Reminds me of Charlie Haden, but Getz is a step above in composition and technical skills IMO. What are his best recordings?

Look for the Cal Tjader Sextet one if you like the vibes: http://www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/2547 Many of his recordings are audiophile in sound quality. The Concord titles are good if a bit laidback.

I might add that the much ballyhooed Getz/Gilberto is highly over-rated imho.

Charlie Haden the bassist?

Can we consolidate all these snippets into a Conne's Stream of Consciousness thread?

That would be a pustulous grotto of dead white women, wrinkled jazz penises, musky fatgirl fatfolds, and the fetid ooze of frustrated impotence that I don't want ever want to stumble upon.

I was listening to a Haden album when I typed that. I was thinking of Stanley Turrentine.

Getz/Gilberto is in my dream list for jazz recordings. A masterpiece.

Getz is in my top three, with Miles and Bill.

For many personal reasons.

Getz is someone who needs to be listened on a reel-to-reel.

Really?

Intersting that getz sounds like turrentine to you...I find them very different in quality. Turrentine to me sounds on the brighter side with a gruff type vibe. getz is lush and dark and more complex... both bad cats though!

Conne, I used to be the same until I picked up "The Steamer". Finally got Getz. I'm also a big bossa nova fan and the Getz/Byrd "Jazz Samba" is also one of my faves.

Here's a little gem for you Gilberto frans:

Yes. I like Anniversary! (Live in Copenhagen). I don't know what's not to like about Stan Getz. His tone is great, his solos have zero bullshit, instead a lot of great motivic ideas.

I like the Z-Trip & DJ P remix.
