^ Don't hesitate to pay the extra money for the handgrade brogues.  Well worth it in the long run.

I picked up some benchgrade brown captoes which I love. They are great looking shoes, just trying to break them in now. I'll post up some pictures shortly.

Sorry for the noob question. What is the different between benchgrade and handgrade?

Built by different shoemakers, so pretty much everything is different - last, materials, construction quality. The benchgrade I feel is a very good value for the money, I love my captoe bals. The handgrade is made by DC Lewis, and they have an official thread here in SF with a lot of info on their brand.

To tack on to this, I already owned $500 santoni black captoes and AE strands before I got the KW benchgrade brown captoes - the KW's are miles ahead of the other 2 in terms of quality. This leaves me to only imagine what the handgrade line must be like.

Some high praise for the shoes which is good because as I said those burgundy ones look very schmick.  As you mentioned you owned the strands can you give any comparison is size between the strand and those?

Both fit true to size, slight heel slip with KWs when I first got them, but that is normal and stopped after a few wears. Find them slightly more comfortable than the strands on my 10D feet.

Just got a pair of the dark brown captoes in this weekend. They're beautiful, but I think might be a little too big for me. I'm sized an an 8D on the Brannock and wear Park Avenues in that size, so that's what I ordered.

The heel slip seems a little too much (like almost an inch of movement?) to resolve like the poster above's experiences. I remember my Park Avenues moving some before the heel conformed, but not that much. There's some slight gap at the heel when I'm wearing them normally, but if I slide my feet up to better conform to the forefoot of the shoe (not jamming them by any means), I think I have a solid 0.5" of gap. Might have to exchange them for 7.5s; was hoping to nail the sizing on attempt #1 to avoid messing up my grad student budget too much, but oh well!

Got my navy hopsack blazer today, it's pretty awesome. I'll get some pics up here soon. My fit has been dialed in pretty good now (3rd jacket...first 2 were suits, this is my first KW ofd jacket), not sure I need to make any alterations at all.

Would anyone be able to compare the relative quality of the AE "Independence" line with the quality of the KW benchgrade shoes? The regular (full) price for the Independence line is noticably higher than the KW shoes, although at discount they are only a little higher. If the quality of the KWs matched up well with the AEs, it seems like it may be a no-brainer decision...

I'll bet you a free pair of shoes that my captoes are better than anything that AE can make. Put another way, if you buy the captoe and can prove that the AE is better, keep the captoes and I'll refund your money.

Our benchgrade range is on par with C&J handgrade

Our handgrade range is on par with John Lobb and Edward Green

Whoa, that's a hell of a boast! Handgrades do look really nice though ...

Haven't read through the whole thread, so maybe it's been discussed, but care to disclose who makes the handgrade brogue and double monk for you?
