While black knit ties can be very nice, I can't think of a situation where you NEED to wear one. If someone WANTS to wear a black tie, then I think knit vs. grenadine is a matter of how casual/formally you dress.

Of course. I just dislike the idea of owning a tie only for "just in case" scenarios, hence the attempt to change the conversation.

If you already have a navy knit or grenadine, however, that's equally versatile. In general, I'll reach for a dark tie before a light one, every time.

(Also, Kent's knits are fantastic smile.gif )

I don't see why a black knit is wrong for a somber occasion. The primary thing that will stand out is its color, not its construction.

Exactly, after thinking it over more I probably don't really need either, so I most likely won't get the knit or grenadine. But the convo here helped me come to the decision.

Sometimes it's best to just get my thought out in the open, because if I just internalized the conversation, there's a chance I may have bought it and it would have sat in the back of my closet. I do have a navy grenadine and several other pretty versatile ties, and more often than not I would see myself reaching for those as opposed to a black tie, be it knit or grenadine. This is one of the few times I get to thank SF for helping me NOT make a purchase.

Why does it matter? You're getting that Panta and you won't be wearing another tie for at least a month. You have time to think it over.

When does the horn comb come back in stock?

My two cents on the black tie conundrum... For a long time I never wore black clothing and I still largely don't. However, I kept hearing the occasional person speak the merits of the plain black tie. So I took a flyer on a black grenadine and a black silk knit. I was surprised at how good they looked with a navy suit against a white shirt w/ a white square. In addition, they also look great against a white shirt under a blue blazer with grey trousers, as well as with plain grey suits and a white shirt. I realize there are a lot of people on here who think blue with black is a no-no, particularly when it comes to dress shoes, but this really isn't the case. Anyway, the whole look is very simple, elegant, and understated, almost the kind of thing you would expect James Bond to wear (and perhaps that is subliminal because that Wax Wane article actually points out that Sean Connery did in fact wear this combo a lot). Kent Wang has a lot of timeless classics, but the navy and black ties are without a doubt some of the most classic. I think it's worth taking a flyer on and worst case scenario someone else on this forum will buy the ties off you.

Kent, and I do apologize if this has been asked, I see that you're offering a few tweed options in F/W collection. Wanted to know if there are also going to be expanded SC fabrics on offer. Thinking of more blends or obvious odd-jacket materials like hopsack. Again, sorry if this has been asked.

I just got a bunch of swatch books from Kent that have some F/W SC fabrics in them - there's a bunch of tweeds, plus other SC fabrics and some really nice navy hopsack options for blazers. I'm just trying to make a few decisions and then I'll probably be sending them back within the next couple of days, so he can probably send them out to you by mid-next week. Or maybe I can send them to you directly, I know I've done that with some swatch books in the past. Also, probably best to email him since he will respond faster to that than he will to posts in this thread.

Thanks for the insight. And glad to hear. I'll shoot him an email this afternoon.

Geuse,

Any suit pics yet?

It's gotta be back from the tailor by now.

Yes! I actually just picked it up, tailor was on vacation so it took a while. I will try and get some pics up here this weekend - traveling for work from now till the end of the week so I don't have the suit with me right now. I'm very very happy with the way it turned out, and it only needed one minor alteration.

What was the fabric again?

It's not cool you're making us wait. I'm going to talk to some mods about it.

Ha, yeah I'm the slowest at adding pics of any kind. Fabric was 102701, can't recommend it highly enough, it's absolutely perfect for a staple mid grey suit.
