Finally signed up for swim lessons to work on my stroke. The coach said that my crawl stroke was pretty good and the reason I was getting tired too soon was that my kicking wasn't as relaxed as it needed to be and that I was breathing too frequently, again causing me to tense up. Worked on breathing every four strokes, as well as a bunch of kickboard work with my flutter kicks. Also worked on some backstroke, mainly practicing the flutter kicks and the shoulder roll. Pretty tired this morning and had to drag myself out of bed. Let's see if I have energy to work out today..

Pretty impressive. I wish I could even do the (butter?)fly.

Will swim shortly and post my failures here.

Thursday 5/6/10 Evening

Continued to work on my stroke. Got tips on arm positioning. Still having trouble relaxing with my kicks and my breathing. I might have to go back to breathing every 2 strokes. My biggest problem is remembering to exhale - I tend to hold my breath and then my lungs aren't empty when I come up for air and I can't get enough, which then tends to exhaust me faster. Kinda like holding your breath and running - can't do it for too long.

Man, swimming is technical! Lots of details..... on the plus side, learned how to do flip turns.. still getting water up my nose.. ... I need to exhale better through my nose.

50s and 100s for the first 10 laps (25 yard pool). then a 500, 300, 300. not bad seeing as i hadn't done a lap of freestyle for 20 years until 5 weeks ago.

Being a smoker (frequently) now I don't have that much stamina for covering that much long distance. But so far walking is concern I can easily cross 20 miles also.

Typically between 4500 and 6000 yards 4-6 times per week.

This morning's workout:

500 warm-up, not timed
10X200 free on 2:45
4X400 IM on 6:00
10X100 back on 1:45
10X50 free on :45
200 cool-down, not timed

Legit workout, totally antithetical to anything I enjoy doing in a pool, though. I'd blow my brains out if I had to do 10x100 back.
