Monks. How casual? - Page 2

I'd like to bump this.

How formal do you think a great pair of black monks can be, say EG or Lobb Prestige?

Doesn't this answer that question (from aportnoy):

"Monks run the full gamet. Style like Oundle and Jermyn II are extremely formal and appropriate with almost any suit. Others with broguing hand stitching are less formal but still can be worn with a variety of combinations including less formal suits."

I think that black monks are weird looking. Monks, imo, should be brown.

I'd put the JL Vale in the same category, wouldn't you say?

Recognizing that I've just shot the rest of this year's wad on two pair of G&G bespokes, I can't help but look ahead to next year. TR's great photo shots, especially of the monks, got me to thinking that my next target would be a pair of monks. But I've also had my eye on G&G's bespoke model and JL's Vale. If you guys were buying tomorrow, which would you choose, and why? (the Vale pic is too large, but appears in the Shoe index.)

I hated the Vale when I first saw it, but it's grown on me and I love it now. It will be to my collection in Chestnut Museum after the Chapel in Dark Brown Museum.

Even though I prefer brown shoes I love my black C&J monks (Savile). I wear them with almost anything. From suits to jeans. Black shoes are favored at my university during more formal events and it's fun to stand out from the crowd in some way.

It goes well with some suits in my opinion.

Not DBs, though.
