So far, I'm liking High Park and St. Clair the best, from what I've read/seen.

Interesting, I live at Yonge Eg and consider the Annex to be a dump. Great food and fun pubs, but I would never want to live there with all the drugged out trash on partrol during the late nights.

Sorry I edited that post to make it more clear. My top 6 areas, in order.

A subway ride from Eglinton station to the financial district will take you roughly 20-30 minutes; more if the TTC is moody.

Danforth (greektown) is a cool place to be, but I wouldn't really want to live there because the surrounding areas get dumpy real quick.

Yeah. But I think that could be said about most areas in the city though. Actually I'm going to change my mind about cabbagetown; the east side of downtown on the whole is not really where you'd want to be (cabbagetown being the exception; i know people who live there who really love it). The problem is that it's right in the middle of a lot of the worst areas. All things considered, I think the best area of the city is the central area, between, say Bloor and Eglinton. It can get expensive though. But $1800 would be doable.

As many have already said, you can't go wrong with the Annex. It's on the TTC, has lots of interesting shops/galleries/parks around, and still has the charm of a quiet, green neighbourhood.

The downsides: you may struggle to find a place that meets your criteria for $1800 and the abundance of frat houses means you need to dodge the occasional puddle of undergrad regurgitant on the sidewalks.

High Park/Bloor West is great, but a little out of the way. Anything north of St Clair may as well be the 905 and can wait until you're sick of life.

Some of the new condos on Bay around College are very nice. The immediate area is a bit quiet, but close to everything. It's a 15-minute walk to the financial district (assuming that's where you'll be working).
