iPod Question

About to install iTunes on a new netbook, and probably make that one my primary account and sync my iPod through it. Will my iPod d/l all my current stuff to the new machine?

No. Your music will not transfer from your iPod to your netbook through iTunes. Your iPod will also probably delete the music on your iPod if you make this netbook your master computer.

There are however workarounds. Try this software.

As far as I recall: No. The iTunes will not take the music installed on your iPod and transfer it onto the computer. However, there are programs / methods available that bypass this and will allow you to move music from your iPod to your computer.

Thanks guys. This is starting to ring a bell, as I changed notebooks about two years ago. I think I dropped my entire library off my old notebook onto an external USB and just used that to move the stuff to the library of the new computer. Does that sound right? Hmmm, or does it transfer purchased stuff, but not ripped stuff? So just copy the ripped stuff to a USB drive?

That's definitely easier than ripping the music off of your iPod. As well, I would recommend picking up an external HD, which nowadays are very inexpensive in order to back up all your music / files that way you always have them elsewhere in case you need them.

These are particularly good and fast:

Your iPod won't transfer any music, purchased or not. Moving music onto and from an iPod only works on your "master" iTunes. This is to prevent users from illegally transferring music to/from each other.

Thanks. Netbooks are due in Tuesday; I guess I know one thing I'll be doing over the TG weekend. I'm pretty sure that's how I worked it a couple of years ago, doing the USB drive transfer of libraries.

Not that it adds anything to this discussion but this is one of the reasons I detest how Apple works and will likely never own an iPod (not ruling it out completely because maybe they will come up with something I must have).

Yeah syncing stuff these days makes my head spin. I'm pretty sure you'll have to re-download all that stuff (free of charge) or if the stuff isn't locked with DRM you can just import it by using a crossover ethernet cable or external harddrive. I think getting a Mac MobileMe account might let you sync a bunch of different devices globally.

If you just keep using Macs though, when you upgrade, you can pretty easily transfer all of your settings.

I think you can transfer your library between computers via "Back up" or "Export". I believe you can also synchronise your iPod with multiple computers but you have to specify that in iTunes somewhere...

Sorry I couldn't be more specific but I never actually tried any of this personally (only one computer).
