Sorry, but this is what you have to understand (sorry to quote myself):

Each has its own niche. Within its niche, each is better than the other. Overall...each has its niche.

I had the flight of them this weekend. I suppose I'm spoiled by single malts, but they didn't do it for me.
Red - rocket fuel
Black - definitely the best quality for the money, but very grainy
Gold - ughhh almost tasteless going down and just a hint of peat on the finish
Blue - fine, but waaaayyyy overpriced
Green - take caol ila and water it down, its cheaper

I agree with this completely.

Hmph. I'm a little surprised as I (and quite a few other Scotch drinkers) really enjoy Gold. It's core is Royal Lochnagar, which is one of my Top 5 malts. Though I have Green, I've never tasted it. ~ H

I'm surprised you'd say this gnatty! Bourbon = whiskey = baseball (in the above statement). You are my Bourbon hero and I'm sort of shocked you'd say Bourbon lacks nuance. Unless the theory is baseball > cricket. I'm so confused. And Scotch whisky does not lack nuance. Okay, I'm just going to have to disagree with the whole statement.

I think the "heart" of the whiskey is Clynelish which I usually really enjoy. Unfortunately, I found the Gold to just be bland and forgettable. I just looked at the JW site and found that they recommend that you drink Gold frozen. Unimpressed.

Glenlivet 15 French Oak was also served at the meal, it was much more refined, complex and delicious. Great value malt.

Bingo. I knew when I was writing it that it would be confusing, but I agreed with I thought his analogy was a good one, just in the opposite direction than the original writer's intent...

The Templeton Rye is good for sipping on it's own, in my opinion. I thought it was absolutely no fun in Manhattans and Old Fashioneds, though.

Wild Turkey Rye is bold and spicey and makes yummy cocktails. I wish this could be cheaply purchased in kegs because you can't go wrong with it in cocktails. A bit too much for sippin'. Got my first bottle of Rittenhouse 100 last week and it's making some yummy Manhattans. The Sazerac suggested makes great cocktails too.

And as someone who prefers Rye over Bourbon in his cocktails, I still think Bulleit bourbon makes a fantastic Manhattan. Maybe my favorite. I believe Bulleit has an extremely high rye content for a bourbon, and I take it that's why I like it so much. And the bottle is cool is hell .
