That and what is the best upconverting DVD player on the makret for under $250.00?

HDTV's will always be cheaper 3 months after you buy it. Why an upconverting DVD player and why not a Blu ray player?

I don't watch blockbusters and thus don’t care for Blue ray in particular. Most of the movies I watch are on 480/720 resolution regular DVDs ,so up converting would be, may be beneficial.

That doesn't make any sense. You're going to get an HDTV, but not a blu-ray player? Do you plan to never buy/watch blu-rays? It's not like they're expensive anymore. I believe Samsung makes a relatively cheap BR player with a Reon chip in it that will do good quality up-conversion as well as play the new format. Wait until black friday sales or boxing day and you can probably get it for that price. Otherwise there are cheaper options that will still play both. BR isn't just for blockbusters fyi. See my recent thread. Lots of old movies have had new life breathed into them and look better than ever.

I did not know that Blue ray machines are universal players. I thought they don't play regular DVDs. Do Blueray machines play Audio CDs?

get a samsung blu-ray player. it will play regular DVDs, audio CDs, and has built-in software that will stream from netflix (free if you have a netflix subscription) and pandora internet radio. i got one from amazon for less than 250.

I expect big-box retailers will all have some phenomenal deal or another on Black Friday on hdtv, blue-ray, etc. If a person cares to get up at some godawful hour and fight the marauding hordes, there will be great prices to be had.

Best Bluray player: http://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-83/

And other than black Friday, I would assume after the Xmas shopping season in January when stores are hurting.

Best Buy had a $99 blu ray player a couple weeks ago that was Netflix enabled. I think Sony has a sub $200 blu ray player as well.

Costco and Sam's Club are two good places to look. I saw a 58" Samsung 1080p HDTV for less than $2k.

Really, the best time to get a TV is any time. It's just picking the right TV. Everyone says black friday is the day to look for one, but where are you looking? Walmart/Target/Bestbuy? The TV's that they carry are not that great, but are priced higher when comparing it to online retailers like Amazon. The best thing to do is know what TV's are worth the money, and just basic knowledge on shopping. -Go to avsforum.com, they have many sections devoted to TV's. Plasma/LCD/LED/CRT/Projection/etc. Give them a budget preference to technology and size, and they will link you to the best bang for your buck. -Chances are the only store that may carry the TV will be bestbuy. If so, great, see a leaked black friday ad, and see if best buy has that tv in there. You may get lucky. Most of the time however, it'll just be on amazon or perhaps best buy's site. -You're thinking "I want to save money". The models of TV's you are recommended will be pretty competitively priced with what you see in the retail stores, but are much better. I asked avsforum for advice for a 50" plasma TV, and showed them a model that was originally 1400 but I could get for 1100ish, and that model was from Target. They pointed me to a 50G10, which was 1300. One reply was "[the model from that retail store] discounted enough to ever make it an option." So yea. For DVD's or Bluray players, I would just get a Sony Playstation 3. Plays DVD's, Blurays, PS3 games, Netflix, can go on the web, etc etc. If you want to look for money savings tips there, Target has this thing where you open up a CC with them, and you get this coupon that knocks 10% off everything you buy that day. Decent little savings, and for something like the PS3, that's how you'll get it for the lowest price.

I'm a huge fan of popcorn hour. Bought my first one last febuary and now have 3. Need a wireless N router to stream 1080p.

Latest popcorn hour is also a server. Got 2 terrabytes in it and it fit inside my bombe chest. Only visible stuff in my living room is the tv and speakers

Works with hulu, torrents, netflix. Got rid of cable a long time ago.

Fucking love popcorn hour. Lol.

Why get Bluray when you can just use Apple TV or netflix or anything where you don't have to go see the teenagers at Blockbuster

Because BluRay is higher quality than ATV HD or Netflix streaming. You can also rent BluRay from Netflix for a slightly higher fee.

"upconverting" is just a gimmic. your tv will do this for you. it is often recommended to turn off this feature on ur dvd player and let ur tv do it anyways. think about it.......when u watch standard definition television, your tv is getting a 480i signal. but lets say u have a 1080p tv. your tv converts it (hence upconverting) to 1080p in order to show it... sorry if this is old news, i didnt read the whole thread as for a good time to buy. if you have a sears around you, and they just happen to carry the tv you want, ask them when the next "family and friends" night is. killer deals - no joke, even compared to online prices.
