Studying in Florence

I'm going to be studying in Florence next semester (January-May), any suggestions?

I'm looking for good places to eat, travel, go out to, etc.

Also, any thoughts on what I should pack? I don't know what the weather will be like and want to pack as light as possible because I'm assuming I'll be bringing a ton of shit back home.

And if anyone has suggestions on a good duffle/weekender that I could use to travel around Europe with, that would be great. I'm looking out for one currently.

I won't be warm. And clothing isn't as cheap as in the US.
What are you studying- art or related?

I hate to revive an old thread, but I didn't feel special enough to start my own, so:

I'm going to be studying in Florence from mid-August until around thanksgiving and need help with what to pack/need general advice about the city (though I've gleaned some info from poking around the site).

So far, I'm probably looking at packing around 7 OCBDs, 4 or 5 polos, 1 pair khakis, 1 pair raw chinos, and a pair of raw denim. For shoes, I was thinking of a pair of boatshoes, a pair of loafers, some leather-soled boots, and some duck boots.

Really, I'm torn with what to pack more than that. I guess two cotton sweaters, a wool one, and a cashmere one? Any suggestions for outerwear?

I have no idea what the weather will be like around Thanksgiving, but you can expect it to be pretty hot when you get there in mid-August. Especially because Florence is a walking city and there isn't always AC. I would throw in a pair of shorts for that..

I think what you're packing sounds good, although I would throw in a pair of sneakers that you don't mind getting beat up. Like I said before, you'll be doing a lot of walking around Florence, and the pair of boat shoes and Jack Purcells that I took got absolutely destroyed.

I don't really know what to tell you about outerwear...I brought a few lighter sweaters that I could layer and had a peacoat as well as a lighter jacket. Seeing as how it won't be too too cold when you're there, I would probably leave a heavy, winter coat at home.

As far as general advice in the city, carry around a map! I had one that was small enough to fold up into my back pocket and took it everywhere I went. It was a lifesaver. Florence is small, but the streets are random and it's not that hard to get lost. I would also recommend staying away from touristy areas (duh) or at the least, not eating there. The food is significantly worse there than places just off the beaten path.

Other than that, just enjoy it. Florence quickly became one of my favorite cities.

Bring a lot of condoms. There are so many cute, co-eds studying art history that it will be like shooting fish in a barrel.

Vl3, did you feel out of place wearing shorts? I contemplated packing them, but thought I might stick out as even more obnoxious than I already was.

The thing you'll notice very quickly is that Florence is FULL of American students and tourists. You won't necessarily stick out since there will be so many other people wearing shorts. I guess it depends on how much you don't want to come off as a student/tourist.
