Well were talking about what I own, what I might buy or wear if given to me for free and what I consider in the acceptable range even if I would never choose it.
Personally I have a pump in black suede from Ferragamo. I would also wear the linked shoe from Moreschi above which has a good formal look (but also works with say a black cashmere blazer and medium grey flannels). Rather than dismissing the monk strap idea, Id have to see the model in question. The more streamlined, simple, unadorned and refined, the more acceptable I would find it for formal wear.
If someone gave me a plain, low napped, one buckle black suede monkstrap with a thin sole which was clipped closely ala Ferragamo in an acceptable toe shape, I might wear it with a dinner jacket if I didnt have any other shoes. However, i personally wouldnt select it otherwise.
