I will spare fuuma the horror of my own list, but this is a good way for me to identify purchases I might not have thought of. Help me stimulate the economy!

edit: And yes, wrong forum.

Ok, fuuma PMed me and really wants to know what movies he should own, so this is my recommendation to him:

The Terminator
True Romance
Blade Runner
Casablanca
Casino Royale
Goodfellas
Godfather1&2
The Matrix
Predator
Unforgiven
Rambo
The Professional
The Princess Bride
Roman Holiday

Yes, I know that's more than 10 but i couldn't restrain myself.

I do enjoy watching Casino Royale and No Country for Old Men.

I like comedy horror movies so I will throw a few must have movies in there.

Dead Alive
Evil Dead
Drag me to Hell

I like to have a large selection on-hand because I tend to watch a movie most nights. I tend to download and buy what I really like. Amazon makes it pretty cheap to amass a good collection so it's not that big a deal. Buying is often just twice as expensive as renting and you get to keep the movie forever.

The only movies I'm interested in owning are the very re-watchable ones, and there aren't many of those.

First, IMHO the *most* re-watchable movie is "A Clockwork Orange"; Kubrik is fantastic anyway, but every time I watch this film I see something new.

If I had to choose 9 more, in no particular order:

"Diva" (directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix)
"The Seven Samurai" (Kurosawa)
"The Dirty Dozen"
"Heat"
"Pulp Fiction"
"Excalibur" (I just never, ever get tired of Nicol Williamson's Merlin)
"The Road Warrior" (best of the Mad Max films)
"Fantasia" (this was actually the first movie I saw, and I still love it!)
"Goodfellas"

These aren't my favorite movies, or the movies I regard as "brilliant" or "important" (I think Kurosawa's best film is "Ikiru", for example), but the ones I find myself watching again every few years.

Upon reflection, I'd really have to populate the list with Bond films, but there are so many... I suppose if I could only chose one, it would be "Goldfinger".

I had to impose serious limitations on myself to narrow this down to even close to 10 films. I almost made it.

I could probably come up with 10 movies that everyone should own in ten different genres.

Brazil
Groundhog Day
Office Space
UHF
Ronin
Bladerunner: Final Cut
BBC Planet Earth
Falling Down
Harold and Maude
Pleasantville
Queen - Rock Montreal
Tampopo
