It is like asking if Frank Sinatra was a popular singer in his heyday.

He had at least a couple of #1 hits, and a number of top fives, so I'd say he was a mainstream success, yes.

While he had mainstream success, my concept of him is that we was outside the mainstream, something of a non-conformist and bad boy.

Anytime I hear anyone say that some one is / was a 'bad boy', I am reminded of this:

While he certainly was all of those things, he was without question, a major success. one of the biggest musical stars in the history of rock 'n roll and country both. he recorded over 1500 songs in his 50+ year career. you can't do that as a flash in the pan.

He is a legend.

Um... kinda, at different points.

In the '50s he was overshadowed by the rest of the Sun Records crew, but sold a ton and was a mainstream success.

His popularity faded during the '60s as his drug problems increased, but after San Quentin, Folsom and recording with Dylan he was back on the map. Primetime variety show, etc.

Faded again from the early '70s until Rick Rubin came into the picture, when his counter-culture image was solidified.
