For some reason I've always loved the Ferrari F50. Sure, other cars are quicker, or handle better, but there's just something about this car to me.

Perhaps it was driving it in the old Need for Speed 2 game.

Personally, I think the coolest car ever is the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 R Stromlinienwagen (streamliner) race car designed by Rudolf Uhlenaut. It was driven by Juan-Manuel Fangio to win the world championship that same year.

It used an M196 R 2.496-liter Straight 8 (utilizing Bosch Direct fuel injection, like the 300SL Gullwing and used 2 valves per cylinder, DOHC, with desmodromic valve operation) engine producing 290 bhp @ 5800 rpm and 217 ft lbs of torque, and 116 bhp per liter. Top speed: 186 mph.

Jon, that car looks like a penis. Swoopy, silver, with weird holes punched in various places, and two exaust pipes coming out one side.

Well, Jon. Here's something from my miscellaneous archival photos. It was snapped at the 1954 French Grand Prix. I saw one of the cars at the old San Francisco International Auto Show (underground in Brooks Hall) in 1966. Stirling Moss was there at the show as a spokesman.

My neighbour has a black one and a friend of mine a Red Alpina. They are very, very nice. M5 (E39) Engine and transmission. More a GT than a sportscar btw. But i'm not very fond of real sportscars anyway.

The Alpina Z8s have an automatic transmission, and use one of Alpina's 4.8L V8, not the one from the M5, and it makes less power than the M5's engine. A red Z8 in the original BMW form is a lovely, lovely car. --Andre

The design of the car is really what makes it IMHO. The lines are simply one of the most beautiful in its class at the moment.
