The real problem though, IMHO, is the combination of the bold color-contrast ties with the dark and / or aggressively patterned shirts. That's what's evoking the "optical illusion" comment. Instant migraine.

Ok thanks. That was a good answer.

There is no need to say IMO. Your statement is a cosmic truth.

All you need to do is switch those dark shirts out and opt for lighter shirts. That will get you 70% of the way there.

These were the dont-kniow.what-to-do ties, so I thought I'd give them a last chance before they got torched

As a side note -- you may want to try thinking about it the way around. If you have a boldly patterned (or boldly color-contrasting) tie, often the best way to rein it in a little is to pair it with a solid shirt, rather than with a similarly bold shirt. Creates better balance. (A light color like a blue is sometimes better than white for this, actually, because white can create a more jarring contrast with some colors and patterns than an ice or sky blue.) Just something to think about.

#3 is almost as bad as the others. The stripes are too similar in size. Little stripes with big stripes, little checks with big checks, etc. No guarantee of success, but it helps a little.
