If you are a beginner, there are certainly better options. (600cc or less NON sportbikes)

If you know how to ride and have spent considerable time learning on a smaller, less powerful bike, go for it.

You probably already know this, but I will say it anyway:
If you are looking to get one because of some Harley "lifestyle" ideas...the V-rod is the bastard child and a lot of "real" harley guys look down on them because porsche designed the engine.

As far as the deals, you can usually get a deal on v-rods because they sit around for awhile. The dealer near me had quite a few the last time I was in. If your local dealer will let you, take a test ride. I don't like the ergonomics of the v-rod, but it's a fun and pretty quick bike.

yes, but also there is also an older crowd that don't like any newfangled technology...some are against liquid cooling, electric start, EFI, suspension...

generally, though, most true motorcycle enthusiasts can pretty much find something positive to say about ANYTHING on two wheels.

I would get a ducati instead of the V rod, but I am sure that you will like it

Victory Hammer S seems more interesting to me, neither are starter bikes. Neither will ever handle that great because of the fat rear tire. Just know what your getting into.

The VP of the Outlaws WPB Chapter was riding a V-Rod, though I'd guess he didn't buy it.

In any case, I'd say that gives it a little street cred, if that's what you're worried about

The V-Rod rides way different from any other Harley...the thing is fast as balls. Keep that in mind.

Thank you all.\\ @ Celtic gent: Thank you for your views and @ Nightowl : Thank you for the humor! @Code red/Serg :I didnt look into the Ducati, and the BMW but I guess while I am at it I might as well keep my options open at this stage. Something about the nightrod attracted me to it. I am not sure what it is but i am going into this with an open mind. So might as well have a look at the other models too. Thank you or pointing it out @BigA: It wasnt about street cred, I just loved riding and havent been on a bike in a year. Been feeling an itch to get out there again and thought I'd make the jump @Mauby : Speed is good

It is fast. I think they are more accepted now than previously when first released. And while part of the HD crowd, it does have its own following. Check the VRod forum for more chatting and info. You should be able to get a good deal at your local dealership.
