And dear old Zsizou became an idiot of the highest order by doing what he did. If he was seriously insulted he could have had Materazzi possibly sanctioned and ridiculed in front of more than a billion viewers if FIFA would have taken action against him. Remember FIFA's push against racism? That would have fallen neatly under its provisions.
It's ridiculous that you deem when it's appropriate to act. It's completely and utterly subjective. If you were in a bar with your girlfriend and a random continously threw horrible insults at her what would you do? Would you clock him? If she were in your presence would that make the act any less noble, as it could have been done in what you thought was an act of chivalry? Do you just walk away? Do you comment (and I love how a verbal scuffle is OK, while a physical one is not; they both have potentially long-lasting consequences)? If Zidane felt it necessary to defend someone's honor, why bother? It's not as if he thought he would gain anything from it...it's a matter of principle. He knew perfectly well what he was doing, and the glare he gave Materazzi afterward definitely backed that. I love how people (many who have never, ever been in such a situation) can cast judgement while making everything black and white. It's not that easy. Maybe in Style Forum Candly Land where you retaliate by slapping someone with a leather glove, then hopping on your stead with a, "Harrumph!" Real life is not Style Forum Candy Land.
Also, I can't emphasize enough (for the millionth time) that Zidane's PK would not have made a difference.
