world cup - Page 57

According to various news sites including BBC reports from people in the Stadium, Zidanne's headbutt wasn't shown on the big screen, hence the France supporters' confusion. I think Italy deserved to win, they have style the French team seemed to lack this time.

Thanks, on this video, you clearly see the italian pinching Zidane's chest.

"I can't tell you how many times my kids have been told at school that I'm a monster."

Disappointed in the outcome and in/for Zidane. Hopefully, parents will have talks with their children about lessons to be learnt. I wonder if Zidane will continue his work with UNICEF.

Bravo Thuram and especially Ribery.

Nobody in the Italian press seems very interested in knowing what Materazzi might have said to Zidane. He simply "Lost his lucidity" (Il Tempo) Zidane, the decline of a champion" (La Stampa).

Espulso, per una testata a freddo contro Materazzi. Un gesto che cambia la fine di una carriera. (Corriere della sera)

"A Freddo", right...

I think it should switch to golden goal and continue on like that until someone wins.

And the fact Zidane won player of the tournament shows that everyone with their head on right knows what went down.

From the AP:

"When I see this, I want to smash his face (Materazzi),'' France defender William Gallas said.

"He can leave with his head held high (Zidane). The other one (Materazzi), even if he has won the cup, cannot. Because there is more to life than soccer,'' he said.

My sentiments exactly.

Thanks, it's all clear now. We have another "Golden Ball" here for the season's best player in europe.

It was this way for a little while, but I think the general concensus was that one goal shouldn't cut-off any chance for the other team to come back. Maybe a combination of the two.

Two 15-min halves of overtime followed by individual 15 minute periods of golden-goal overtimes until someone scores.

What do you think was said that could have invoked zidan? it must be very intense to cause him to do what he did.

From ESPN:

The prize was decided by media votes, cast before Zidane was shown the red card. Zidane received 2,012, Italian captain Fabio Cannavaro finished second (1,977) and his team mate Andrea Pirlo was third (715).
That being said, I appreciate the savagery. I actually fell asleep during the second half. So I missed the headbutt altogether. Whatever. If the general consensus feels that it was racially motivated, then good for you Z. In another thread, I said that I firmly believe that at some point, in every sentient being's life, they are going to need a punch in the mouth. Maybe yesterday was Materazzi's day. Lets just hope that a headbutt in the chest on an international stage is as effective as a punch in the mouth.

Am I right in thinking I heard the referees being booed (whistled at) when they received their medals?

I heard that voting for the Golden Ball wasn't closed until midnight--at least Brent Musberger said something like that on ABC. Maybe he was joking.

And FIFA says (contradicting Lippi) that no video replay was used.

AFP: Le meilleur joueur, ou Ballon d'or du Mondial, a été désigné par les journalistes accrédités pour suivre la 18e édition de la Coupe du monde : ils avaient jusqu'à dimanche minuit pour voter.

(They could vote until Sunday at midnight.)

They can't possibly say otherwise.
