world cup - Page 55

Domeneche still looks better than Lippi. Much more stylish.

No Zidane at the medal ceremony. Fitting, I suppose, but a horrible way to end one's career.

Oh please guys, no need for sour grapes. If France really deserved to win they would have won, they were unable to get themselves to finish an attack succesfully. Italy got no preferential treatment. Plus Zidane's behaviour was unacceptable - he deserves having the media bury him for that. I feel bad for the French player (forgot the name) who missed his shot . That is really unfortunate for him but what can you do, mistakes will happen. P.s. Stax that is not football, sorry. Carry ball is more appropriate. Edit: Bob I agree on Zidane.

I don't think there's any sour grapes here, just a bad feeling that the game didn't end well. Not simply that France lost, but that Zidane was sent off, etc. Really it's all just condolences to friends. And winning on PKs is a weak way to end. Yes, poor Trezeguet.

I understand that before the days of huge TV contracts, that games like this would end on a draw and simply be replayed. There's a good argument for that.

And now that it's over we can see if Bruce Arena is getting fired or not. Pleeeeaze let it be so.

I'm torn.

On one hand, that headbutt was pretty awesome. On the other hand, you can't help but think he would have helped.

Ah well. I wish he had broken his sternum.

What could have been said to make a veteran headbut a guy like that, and at that time?

I wonder if he'll be getting a call from Jaques Chirac?

A call? Chirac was there in person. Would not be surprised if ole Jacques tried punching Zidane out himself . If that were to happen in South America the odds are good that someone would have either beaten the crap out of him or shoot him

Congratulations to Italia!!!

Btw, what a douche Zidane turned out to be. He definitely lost some respect from me.

Now that I'm settled:

What a crap way to end a World Cup (in PKs). But alas, the entire tournament has been riddled with shoddy refs and dives aplenty. Definitely a new low for the cups that I've been able to watch. The groups were more exciting than the elimination play.

As for the match: I hope something terrible happens to Materazzi. Zidane is probably going to be the greatest player I see in my time, and it's upsetting that he can't get respect during his last match on the pitch. I don't think what he did was right, but it's easy to cast judgement sitting behind a computer screen. Nobody likes being touched and mocked by a bunch of sissies, and at least Zidane floored him in the coolest way possible.

Yeah, I can see how Zidane can get so frustrated at not being able to score a goal that he has to physically assault the only guy in the game that scored a real goal - who happened to be on the other team. And I agree with you about casting judgment from behind a computer screen - I mean you couldn't tell from watching it on television whether Zidane was not himself physically assaulted or in danger of being assaulted by Materazzi before he went and headbutted him in the chest.

That shot by Zidane was so....French.

An assault by a Frenchman is deemed "French"? Whoa, I never knew they were such warriors.

That's like saying the Italian play (greasy, slimy and grossly flamboyant) was so Italian. Oh wait...

I appreciate the opportunity the world cup affords to make good natured ethnic jokes.

Zidane...I feel empty inside. How could he do that?

He is still my favourite player of all time, I almost cried when I saw him do that.

I wonder if the headbutt had any force behind it. It's tough to tell in slow motion and we all know what great actors the Italians are. Not that it excuses Zidane, but I'm curious.

It also pisses me off that they showed the replay on the big screen in the stadium. That is verboten and may have influenced the red card if the ref or lineman saw it.
