How much are you tipping your doormen?

Yes tip culture in NYC in a joke; but it's expected. I have 11 doormen, 3 porters, 1 super.

Minimum (not average) for my building through word of mouth (hopefully inflated) is 100 per doorman/50 porter/200 and up for super depending, how much you use him.

That's $1,450 for the low-end and I rarely see some of them, wtf. I feel bad for my friends who live in 40+ story high rises with 5 times the staff.

I tip to the general fund and then give something extra to the 4 doormen I actually see.

I was told general fund is a huge no-no, as what's stopping a doorman from pocketing it all which sucks even worse 'cause then I actually have to locate 11 doormen by face, night guys included..

I'm thinking this year I'll just cut checks (another big no-no) to everyone and leave in a nice bundle on the desk to save me some time.

Shouldn't there be a general monetary requirement by the building board / administration for tips all of which is put into a general fund and distributed to the building staff accordingly?

Why doesn't the administration pay them appropriately and include each tenant's portion in their rent or HOA fees?

why isnt there a minimum wage so this kind of tipping becomes unnecesary.

There is, but if you are big-timer like myself you tip them anyway.

You kidding me? NYC doormen are unionized, so they earn significantly more than minimum wage. I have a friend who lives on the UES who bitches about it every time I swing by his place. I rather think he likes the system, just so he has something to complain about.

When I lived in the City it was customary to tip about 3/4 of the numbers the OP quoted in my building. I spent about $1000 on tips around the holidays. Always cash and in person.

Only small timers worry about this. I just let my majordomo handle this type of thing.
