Are the Dallas Cowboys still "America's Team"?

Scott Van Pelt brought up a good point on his show today, are the Cowboys really America's team anymore? It was NFL Films that gave them the title, but lately they have done much of anything nor do they inspire the deep love/hate divide they used to (like in DC or Philly).

I'm a Patriot's fan and they are certainly a love/hate type of team, plus they have the best record in the game for the past decade, recognizable stars, the best QB to possibly ever play the game and the mad scientist himself running the show. However, Spygate has taken some of the luster off the team, regardless of how BS that whole thing was and they're not even the most popular team in the region even when they're kicking ass.

The Colts, well, they're in a middle of nowhere. They're undefeated and aren't getting any media attention in places that matter. So... no. Good rivalry though.

The Steelers have always been in serious contention for 40 years and they have the most titles of any football team. Plus, I'm hard-pressed to find a single city that doesn't have a major Steelers bar and enough fans to put whatever hometown team fans on notice... or straight-up dominate. They can inspire the love/hate divide that the Yankees, Red Sox and Pats can but minus the scandals. They can also relate well with the middle America types as well as the city folk.

So, what say you?

"america's teams" is a euphamism for whatever team has been doing well lately, and every fuckface without allegiance comes out of the woodwork.

See: 99% of Arizona Cardinals fans

in this case, yes, the Dallas Cowboys have done jack **** in recent years and thus nobody cares about them anymore. I'd venture to say that there are way more Steelers fans than there are people from Pittsburgh.

Easily! As there are more Red Sox fans than there are people in all the New England states.

They're just annoying. It's sad how they think they have a good team, there are high schools that could dominate that division!

last i checked, Romo has the highest selling jersey of any US sports figure. they just built (i think) they 2nd most expensive stadium in the world. they gather lots of hate/attention simply because they are the cowboys, i really havent seen a shift in their popularity. their fans may have never been as dedicated/hardcore as pitt, but im not sure thats the point

just because they are not winning playoff games doesnt mean they arent americas team, whatever the fk that means.

so in review, they have the most popular qb, most popular owner, biggest/best stadium, and still hold the biggest passive fanbase of any team. i dont really have numbers to support this claim, but i would guess that their games are also the most watched nationwide

disclaimer: cowboy fan

Definitely still America's team. One of the few teams you either love or hate, which is the definition of America's team. See: Yankees, Lakers. It doesn't matter that they have not won - perhaps in the early 2000s they lost some of that lustor but all it took to get it back was a couple of winning seasons. As phreak says, jersey sales do not lie, and tv execs / nfl schedule-makers are not morons. Dallas always has the most MNF/SNF games and is shown on national television on sundays more than any other non-local team. This is not by accident.

Just because you hate a team does not prove it is "not America's team".

I hate how once anything gets said on ESPN, it just gets repeated ad nauseum until you want to throw up. They were talking about this on SportsNation over a week ago. I've heard it on Mike & Mike and other **** too. Ugh.

Maybe it's a Northern thing... we could careless about the Cowboys. They haven't been relevant since the early 90's.

After they crush the Packers this Sunday, their "all-american team" status will be even stronger

Edit: Sorry - I just noticed that you are a Patriots fan.

To phreak: Romo is a good quarterback. Sure, he's hasn't been clutch late in the season but he's in the top 5 best current NFL QBs.

i can find sources that cite cutler, favre, manning, romo as the top seller. im not sure which one is most accurate though. also, lol @ anyone saying romo is actually good, fantasy or otherwise. actually, i dont think anyone said that so nm.

Romo is good. Only QBs that I would rather have on a team are Peyton Manning, Brady, or Brees. End of story.
