Best of these NYC hotels for Nightlife?

Thread Starter
Planning a trip to NYC next weekend, and I wanted to try out a different hotel. Obviously a hotel that is a great nightlife scene would be preferable to one that isn't, but feel free to evaluate the hotels on other criteria as well.

I'm debating between 60 Thompson, 6 Columbus, and the Thompson LES.

I'm open to other suggestions, but before someone suggests the Gramercy Park Hotel or anything, I'm trying not to spend more than $350 a night (I've found all of the above for under that). I'm already undoubtedly going to spend more than enough on clothes, dining, and drinks this weekend.

(and no, I have no desire to stay at the Ace hotel).

Unless you plan on doing a bottle service, no one night should run you anywhere near that much. If you are, expect to spend that much for one bottle. As for nightlife, what scene suits you? Lounge, bar or nightclub? What type of music do you like? The best thing about NYC is that it has just about everything for just about everyone. I've been living it maybe 4 nights a week for 3 years now. Can't get enough of it! As for hotels, I wouldn't always go to the bars in the hotel. The W is notorious for being amazing, I also hear Dream is good, passed by it a few times and it looks pretty cool from the outside with all the strobes going up building. There's tons more, I'm sure you'll get a variety of responses from other people here as well.

Thompson LES is fun

Thompson LES or Jane (or has the JH bar been closed yet?)

The Algonquin's Blue Bar in midtown is a great old-school place to try. Drinks are very overpriced, $20 a pop or so, but extremely well made....and a bit of a secret, they have a $25 food gift cert on restaurant.com that you can get for $4 with the code so it mitigates some of the damage.

FYI one of the Blue Ribbon restaurants is in Six Columbus and it is quite nice and low key. I did see A-Rod and Kate Hudson there a couple weeks ago with their entourage, prob b/c it is low key. Same night, I saw Wallace Shawn (guy who plays Vizzini in Princess Bride). The Hudson Hotel next door has quite a few nice bars and can have quite a nice crowd. The Mandarin Oriental across the street from Six also has a nice bar.

Stay downtown, in the LES or at Thompson. Much better nightlife. Most of those hotel bars/scenes will be plenty fun without the need for douchey bottle service. That's the Douchevoort.

+1 I've been to a rooftop place in midtown called MAD46 once... Stay downtown if you want to party.

I just stayed at the Jane for a week. For $99 a night it's a bargain. Bar is open, Ballroom closed after raid (health & safety problems, dodgy licenses etc.) Edit: I should add that residents have no priority access to the bar - if it's late and the bouncer's there, expect to get turned away for not being hip enough :-)

I'll probably be pegged a tool but Whiskey Blue can be fun, emphasis on can. I prefer it best during happy hour since it's a lot of people who work in the area or at the 11th hour when the overall pretentiousness dies down a bit and people really let loose, staff included. Anytime in between, you get a weird mix of wide-eyed tourists and tools from nearby JPM trying to be the new G. Gecko.

another +1 for the thompson LES, in terms of the hotel itself and the nightlife in & around it.

A lot of tourists like the bar/lounge called 230-fifth. It's in a hotel on 5th Ave(#230). I personally don't really see the big deal about it, and it's gets filled with bad crowds sometimes but most out of towners love it.

230-Fifth isn't a hotel http://www.230-fifth.com/ +1 Thompson LES Hudson hotel nightlife is OK but the rooms are tiny. Also, once you leave the hotel your nightlife options are very limited unless you plan on cabbing.
