Am I right? Probably.

The Pastoral (#6) should be higher.

Haven't heard the first. I should note that the recording I have of the 7th is a live Bernstein recording that practically put me to sleep, so it's possible my opinion would improve with a different performance. I saw the 2nd when performed by the Greensboro Symphony Orcherstra and I enjoyed it very much- it's by no means a piece of juvenalia- but it's not especially fresh in my memory.

If you haven't listened to the 9th all the way through, WTF are you doing even listening to music at all?

I've got the ubiquitous Kleiber recording of the 7th and I think it's great, but I know almost nothing about the historical significance of it compared to its peers. I'm in it for the sound quality. Edit: Sorry, Furtwangler.

I should also note that my opinion of the 5th suffers from the fact that the finale was the origin of every John Williams film score cliche. Here are two highlights from two underrated symphonies: The solo clarinet line here is as neckhair-raising as the solo clarinet passage in the recapitulation of the #5 Mvmt.1. Electric in the way only major-key Beethoven can be.

I love the eighth... it's a classical symphony (minuet and all) written by a mature Beethoven. I think the "underrated" symphonies (1,2,4,8) are historically less significant, yes, but they are all fantastic. There are no clunkers here, which is rare among symphonists (Brahms excluded).

...

No matter what, I always wind up back at the Cleveland/Szell cycle. TCO, moreso than any American orchestra I've heard, has a knack for truly capturing the style of each composer.

My favorite rendition of the second movement of No.7 is throughout the film "The Fall," but I've never been able to find a full copy of it. I also like Berstein's take on it but my favorite is a random, no-name copy I found online; never been able to attach an orchestra to it.

IMDB says:

"Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92, II. Allegretto"
Music by Ludwig van Beethoven
Performed by The Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Deian Pavlov

It was probably arranged specifically for the film.

Yeah, I've found that before, too, but as the film has no formal soundtrack it would appear that the piece is impossible to get a hold of.
