My granddad's trust paid out today and I'm a business student. I've got some internships and interviews coming up and I decided that my grandpa would be really proud if I used the money to buy a nice suit(he was always a very inspiring dapper older gentlemen God rest his soul). I went by the local men's shop in my area and asked the proprietor what kinda suit I could get for around $500. I explained to him I'm a 38 and want a slim fitting suit but not anything trendy so as one could tell in 5 years how old my suit was. He said he had just the thing for me and came back with some swatches for a BCBG Attitude suit. The grey swatch appealed to me but I'm not sure if this is a really good suit.

I wanna hear opinions on two things in particular:

BCBG Attitude suits

If no than what else am I looking at for <$500

I understand that we have a B&S but I'm just not comfortable handing over my granddad's inheritance for something that may or may not fit me. I want it to be new...

Thanks fellas for reading and have a great day.

One final thought....

I've just finished skimming through yoox.com and what looks to be a decent John Varvatos grey suit(I'm looking for grey).

Any thoughts on this?

youre not going to look at B&S because of concerns over not fitting but you are looking at yoox? yoox has almost no measurements besides chest and waist (and usually what is just labeled on the suit) and jv has several cuts that requires you to wear a different size (hampton cut as opposed to their more conservative cut) and yoox doesnt make mention of them.

at least on b&S you will get pesonable answers and via PM will get any answer you want in terms of measurements and if it may fit, as these guys here are more knowledgeable in that than some customer service rep on yoox. they arent going to crack out the tape measure (let alone how to measure) to give you any helpful info.

Is that BCBG as in BCBG Max Azria? I can't imagine those would be good.

Bloomingdales has 20% off extra this week and they always have suits on sale, and there's always Nordstrom Rack or Yoox or STP. I think even Jcrew would be a better option than BCBG.

One more vote for B&S. Buy something nice and NEW for $400, spend $100 to tailor it to you, and thank your grandfather. You're simply not going to find a better bang for the buck anywhere else.

i would invest in a quality garment that would pay off in the long run. there's the BS forum which i would concur with. and I would also look into the upcoming sales black friday outlet sales as well.

Stay away from both the suit and the salesman.

I'm sorry but I believe you are posting on the wrong thread

You make a very good point. I suppose the reason why I stated this is because I didn't want to get alot of people saying "skim through the B&S thread. I've already done that and I was just looking for some opinions. Other than that I will have to agree with your point. I suppose I prefer instant gratification but perhaps sifting through the hundreds of threads for a 38 slim-fitting gray suit would be worth it.

There is something to be said about getting your first suit at a place where you can get to know it a little before you spend all that money. And then from there, be a little more discerning with your money, and trying to get a better product for your money, but only after you know what you want.

Thanks for the heads up. I was thinking the same thing when I saw BCBG

I fully agree that B&S gives the best for the least but I was looking for more opinions on what I should be looking for. The purpose for me saying this was so that I didn't get dozens of people saying "look on B&S"

I'm looking for a 38 gray slim-fitting, flat-front, slightly tapered leg suit.

Finally someone who understands my point! I wanna wear it feel it and see it on me before I fork over my grandfather's inheritance.

It's my REAL suit people...I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for other than something than what I've described.

Not anything trendy and the guy's first thought is BCBG?

If price is your primary concern, Jos. A Bank has a sale going on where you can get a standard navy 2-button suit for $550 and then choose 5 free items. Might be worth a look if you'll also need a dress shirt, links, tie, etc. Not too shabby for a first suit.

For reference sake let me just show this....this suit really stood out to me when I saw the movie The Proposal and I thought to myself that's exactly the kinda suit I want. I know this isn't the best shot but people who have seen the movie will probably know exactly what I am talking about.
