Lexus / Toyota -- Sudden Acceleration Issue -- Deaths Reported

Has anyone been following this? http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la...,6120294.story Are the floor mats the issue, or is there something more to this?

I think the concept of "sudden acceleration" is so foreign to most Toyota and Lexus drivers, that when they accidentally step on the gas pedal hard, they do not know how to handle the feeling of "sudden acceleration" and panic. Thankfully, most models are incapable of sudden acceleration, or the deaths would be epic in scope.

Interesting, I have a hunch some Houston PI attorneys have been following this.

Reminds me a lot of the 80's: AUDI: Acceleration Under Demonic Influence.

yeah but they get good mileage

My lexus went in for a service and they removed the driver's side floor mat... probably some problem with stupid owners getting ready for winter and putting in or adjusting their mats and placing them over the pedals by accident, or putting them too high so the break doesn't go down all the way, or (sudden acceleration) it might be that the pedal gets stuck under the mat...

I was a tech for Toyota several years ago, and as such I have driven thousands of the damn things. I have experienced sudden WOT moments, but most of the time I fixed it by giving the gas pedal a quick punch and then revs came back down. Though on the floormat issue I found that most idiots out there who put the thick rubber all weather floor mats get the wrong size (way too big) and put them on top of the stock floor mats. I had a prius come in that had some sort of aftermarket floor tray that covered the entire carpet and would frequently get snagged on the pedals just in normal driving.

So basically, this sounds like an ID 10 t error?

I've been driving Lexus cars since the mid-90s and have never experienced this.

When I was buying my Corolla last month, they said the all weather mats were recalled since idiots were putting them over the regular carpet mats instead of in replacement of the carpet mats. As a result, the extra height jammed the pedals sometimes.

Audis have a little circular plastic catch at the four corners of the floor mats that prevent this from happening; ingenious system really.

Yes, but most people are morons.

Would be funny if the GS and LS weren't fast as shit.

Quite true. They are very quick to 60 mph. Ditto for IS 350.

But it's the same Lexus and Toyota drivers.
