Yes, another rampant consumerism and shameless self promotion thread from me. I thought it might be interesting to post what you get when you (or your immediate family) make a significant non-clothing related purchase. Automobiles, electronics, buildings and property, cookware, home decor, appliances, and etc. Lets try to keep it within the realm of physical items. Pictures would be appreciated. I'll start it off: Bought a new cell phone. Sony Ericsson W600i phone.

So far, I like it. I have recieved one comment that I sound a bit echoey on it, but I was talking to her from the waiting room at jiffy lube. Maybe that had something to do with it. My dad just got a 42" Phillips Hi-def LCD tv.

I really like the ambilight so far. I haven't watched any Dvd's on it yet... maybe later I'll let you all know how it looks.

If so, that is a rediculously sweet looking watch. edit: that is the 42 mm one... but its pretty cool anyways.

NICE!

Where did you get it from if I may ask? I seriously need to get one of those Sekonda watches but I have been waiting for a vintage one...

Yeah I have large wrist/hand so I got the 45... it doesn't feel/look oversized at all.

thanks! i got it from Klaus at burantime.de. his site is in german, but he speaks english as well.

he doesn't have any of the original Sekondas, only the 'retro' Strelas. i've seen some vintage Sekondas of this style on ebay though.

I have seen some of those on eBay too; I am concerned though with the servicing. I have read enough horror stories from the Russian Forum on Watchuseek of watch repair poeple being dismissive and just saying "can't fix, no parts" or "Russian? Not a Rolex? Rubbish!" A little OT: I know this may sound weird but when it comes to vintage items/antiques/et.c. I seriously believe that if you cannot be the steward of those items in a responsible fashion, you should not get them. Big reason I feel uneasy getting antique japanese swords, their preservation and polishing is so expensive and time consuming... However when it comes to the less rare Soviet watches (like the Vostok radio room watch) I am fine with it. Plus those watches were meant be tough as nails. My radio room watch is NOS that has been in a warehouse without being serviced for about 15 years, yet is still accurate. P.s. that would look great on a nice Bund strap

Vintage items, especially vintage luxury items, require a fair amount of care, which sometimes becomes difficult and expensive.

It's usally the more better made a vintage item is, the more expensive and tedious their care is.

I agree. There are not many thing I own that are like that, a few pieces of japanese sword fittings that are old-ish, some assorted other bits et.c. I must say though that at some point you need to make the decision whether the piece will be serving its function or not. My favourite piece, a double sakura tsuba (the one in my avatar) is actually mounted and used on my iaito. It is serving (sort of) the function for which it was intended (err, well, other than protecting my hand from some ronin's blade

). Initiallyt I had a different piece mounted that was so-so, although an antique. But when I received my iaito, I realised that I really wanted to have that old swordguard on it. Even if that meant that it would degrade a little. Does not matter though, I am now contributing to the piece's patina like its prior owners
