Poll: What color is your favorite blazer?

Do you have one go-to blazer that comes out of your closet before all others? If so, what makes it your favorite and/or why is it so versatile? Do you have a blazer in a particular color that you never wear? Why is that color so lacking in versatility? Tell me what you like about your favorite blazers and what you dislike about your least favorite ones.

I want your input because I have an ulterior motive in posting this poll. I just ordered a MTM navy blazer, but now I have the opportunity to buy a burgundy blazer and/or a camel jacket for good prices. Since I've been on a major buying spree, I'm a little strapped for cash and don't want buyers remorse to set in. My thoughts are that burgundy is not an especially versatile color and I should probably pass on the burgundy blazer. Although a camel jacket is a classic, I have low contrast skin and hair and my skin has no golden tones, so my coloration makes me more of a Summer. I've read that Summers should avoid camel and, while I don't completely buy this and think most men can wear most colors, I might find it difficult to coordinate a camel jacket to construct good-looking, low-contrast outfits. So I'm especially interested to hear from those who own burgundy blazers and camel jackets, but I thought it would be fun to make the post more general and do a poll.

Blue.

I prefer non solid jackets other than a blue blazer.

I like a shade lighter than navy.

For other colours I like some texture and surface interest. They include jade green, deep red, purple, browns, cream, but they are much less versatile than blue.

I don't like burgundy or camel solids. Some sort of pattern would indeed be better.

My navy blazer has never let me down. I can just throw it on over anything and just go. When I don't know how to pull an outfit together, I just put it on and everything seems to click.

I chose my green Chan blazer over my blue Chan blazer largely because green is far less ubiquitous than blue as a blazer color. Probably if practical considerations dominated, I'd have to choose blue. I think it's more versatile. I am planning to get a 6x2 DB navy blazer from Chan this summer. That will give me four blazers--three from Chan and my old Nordstrom blazer for knockabout duty. That should suffice me pro tem.

I'm surprised that in the early returns gray "blazers" are figuring prominently. I don't really think of gray as a blazer color. I wonder if these respondents aren't making the common mistake of using "blazer" and "sport coat" as synonyms.

I considered burgundy, but I thought it might be a little flashy, especially on a man my size. You and I are the same height, thinman, but there's a lot more of me otherwise!

With a sufficient number of shades and patterns, your shirts, ties, and trousers can provide more than enough harmony and contrast to dispel what I feel is "seasonal nonsense"! I believe the key lies in what you wear with the blazer. Certainly, uncommon colors such as burgundy require more creativity in order to prevent the "oh, he's wearing that red coat again" remarks.

Over many years, my closets have become home to just about every shade (including many different blues, grays, and greens) of blazer imaginable. I am a blazer addict.

I even have a beautiful salmon colored Sulka cashmere blazer with MOP buttons.

More blazers justify more shirts that justify more ties that justify more trousers that surely mandate more shoes. But, everybody knows this! Right?

I would not opt for the burgundy as it is too limited a color. I also can not wear camel favorably due to skin color. So I would opt for the navy blazer.

I have 5 in the regular closets. One throw on for very casual wear in the downstairs coat closet (Pat Zileri). One for dressier casual wear or even the occasional business casual wear (Faconnable with patch pockets), two DB with gold buttons worn less often because they are a bit dressier (Canali and Canali), and a recent at retail Navy SB Brioni purchase. The latter actually gets the least wear of any of the SBs since I find I wear the navy blazer in a lot of situations that don't call for a $2800 blazer such as air travel, worn over my faconnable or Zanella dress denim jeans, a party where smoking and drinking will occur, or other occasions of some risk to the coat.

I recall that you need MTM for fit, so would think the stock blue blazer would be a cornerstone of your wardrobe.

I think I wear this grey blazer more than any other item of clothing I have.

I have only one blazer (my personal definition of a blazer is that it has metal or enamel buttons; otherwise it's an odd jacket) and it's a green Brioni DB. So I guess green is my favourite! I certainly don't like blue.

I generally prefer sports jackets to blazers and have several different greys as well as a plum and various lighter. But sometimes a blazer seems to work better with an outfit so I ended up getting the green one.

None of the above. I prefer patterns, not single colors.

Jan, I'm also surprised by the returns where gray stands out as such a popular blazer color. I expected black to rank more highly, though perhaps not for those who post here. I think I could pull off a burgundy blazer, but as Full Canvas says, I'd need to avoid the comments about "that red jacket again". So it may not be such a wise purchase as a second blazer.

whoopee, I also like texture and surface interest in my clothing and had to make a difficult choice between tactile texture or visual texture in the MTM navy blazer I just ordered. I opted for Escorial wool for tactile texture and MOP buttons for visual interest, but my next MTM blazer will have some visible texture in the fabric.

Full Canvas, I agree with you to some extent about the "seasonal nonsense". As general guidelines, I think they're good, since they steer me away from some colors that look hideous on me, like lime greens and oranges. However, I doubt that many people fall squarely in one "season" and a lot depends on what you wear with a particular color. I think I could pull off a camel jacket, if I combine it carefully with low-contrast clothing.

Perry, although I do need MTM for a truly good fit, I find that if I'm careful, some RTW jackets are OK (Euro 50L is a pretty good fit from most Italian manufacturers). So my strategy is to have the staples like a dark suit, navy blazer etc. MTM in interesting fabrics and then troll the outlet stores, consignment shops, ebay, etc. to round out the wardrobe. Shirts are a different story; for shirts it's MTM all the way.

"Seasons" is one of the worst concepts to be popularized by image consultants.

Blazer color is limited more by tradition than by coloring.
