I could care less about Flea. I was talking about the freer, richer, more improvised sound once Juan Alderete de la Pena was brought in on bass from Frances onward. Obviously, it comes back to Omar because he decides who plays, how they play, and ultimately what TMV sound like from album to album.

Yea, everything people like about TMV (except really spacey, lack of focus stuff) RoC did pretty much better as poly demonstrated with enfilade and almost any song link from the cd. If anything TMV seems more immature than atdi considering TMV's attitude, approach to music and what i've read in interviews.

1st ATDI album i caught was "Relationship ...". i was an instant fan right from the 1st listen. it's tragic that such a band should decease, but was not really surprised when they did. the band was an amalgamation of motley talents that seemed to be schissed into 2 dominant personalities from it's inception. they can't churn the same shiet forever as a band... the splt is about natural progression.

from the point of splinter, De-Loused and Wiretap Scars demonstrated how TMV & Sparta sounded similar and yet all so different... like siamese twins chopped from the hips who no longer have to move as one. each are left to their own devices to transcend & metamorphose. TMV's just doing that, i think, as artists...

Really? Really?

i think another reason why I still stand strong behind ATDI is because before and after them, there are no bands that sound like them. it was really something else during the time, and the stuff they got lumped in with was laughable in comparison. I don't know if it's a nolstalgia trip for me, could very well be, but ATDI really pushed the limits of "punk" during their tenure....

Fugazi is the only comparable band, really. But I listen to ATDI more than I do Fugazi, so I guess I like them better.

I agree, there were unique and you couldn't really compare them to any other band and they didn't fit within a typical genre. At the time the only vaguely similar bands were those with screaming vocals which would put them with screamo/grindcore bands of the time like Orchid, pg. 99, Red Scare, etc who had nothing similar in the music style. I'm glad I got to see them twice, both times were weird line-ups. Around when in/CASINO/OUT with Ultimate Fakebook and The Get Up Kids, and later when RoC was released with Hot Rod Circuit and Thursday opening (which I find hilarious as the lead singer from Thursday pretty much aped Cedric's swinging the mic and stuff like that later on). Some german dude posted a bunch of live videos recently of ATDI, they were definitely a good band to see live http://unartignyc.com/2009/10/29/atdi/
