First off, let me say I am from the US, and I am not a baseball fan. I love sports for the competition, adversity, and the fact that any given day, miracle upsets can happen. But that isn't always true.

I've always found it curious how professional sports call their teams 'World Champions'. Do they compete on a world stage with many teams from other countries? American football, and baseball are most notorious of this, but I have heard it in the NBA as well.

You do not hear it however, in the NHL, MLS, etc. Maybe that is because these sports actually have teams all around the world, and if we were to proclaim something like 'World Champs', we would quickly have our arses handed to us.

I am also not a big fan of buying championships. Yankees fans can pretend all they want that they are not doing this, but the numbers say otherwise. The Yankees payroll at over $200 million is over 50% greater($135m) the next closest team. In the NFL, the difference between the two highest salary teams is only about $6m. Also, in their 108 year history, they have won an astounding 25% of the time. Institute a salary cap and lets see how good the Yankees really are. Anybody can win if they buy all the best players. Detroit Red Wings, Lakers, Manchester United, etc...

You made the point. They are the WORLD CHAMPS because they buy amoung the best players in the world Matsui, Rivera. It goes on. The Bosox and Mets are trying to follow the lead. The difference is there is no team in sports that carries the commitment of winning more promenent than the:

Yes, Pio's protestations aside, Canada is a different country. The Yankees won the club championship for the MLB(?), one of the better (best?) baseball leagues in the world. They are 'World' Series winners of MLB, not world champs....

The BBC reported on or actually conducted the research a few short years ago which determined, based on the statistical probability of any given favored team fulfilling the predicted outcome (think Yankees v Royals), that baseball is the world's most exciting sport. It said prior to about 2005, football (soccer) had been number one, but that the financial disparity between the top four and the bottom 16 had altered that.

So, there definitely is something to be said for the miracle upsets by and magic seasons of mid- and small-market teams.

The 'World Champions' title has always done me in, though until recently, American sports were very nearly purely American events.

In United's case, let's see just how well they fare without Ronaldo. Arsenal's not been the same since Henry departed. Wider purse strings no doubt helps greatly, but a £200m budget not including the world's best player's not the same £200m with him.

At any rate, how's this about fashion? Yankees wear pin-stripes? Adidas v Nike boots and cleats, which is better constructed? Shouldn't this be relegated to general/idle chat section?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4581374.stm It's from 2006. And I was wrong above: for the years 1996 to 2006, baseball was the most exciting. I wonder why they've excluded tennis? The mens game has been a bit static, but the womens has seen some very exciting rises and falls.

Teams with a "commitment to winning" don't lose series when they are already up 3-0.
