What to wear for private performance?

Hello,

I'm performing in a private recital for the donors who contribute to the arts at my university. The guests will likely be in semi-formal dress, and I was planning on wearing my 3-piece with bow-tie and pocket square. The performance is in somebody's home. Is this appropriate for the setting?

Thanks!

If your instrument is bag pipes, I would suggest a Prince Charlie.

You are the performer. So even if you wore tails, it would be ok.

I would say dress to the guests level so neither they nor you feel either over or under dressed and try not to distract from the moment and/or music.

Thanks, fair points.

And it's a saxophone, but if I played bagpipes you can be damn certain I'd wear full kilt.

....

Come to think of it, I may wear one anyway. Piobaire, do you have one I could borrow?

When you say my university, do you mean where you attend or where you teach...?

I have an entire Prince Charlie, complete with fly plaid. Come get it

Where I attend. It's a "thank you" for the donors who have supported the arts department during our recent expansions and projects, and a few of us undergraduate musicians were recruited for the occasion.

Piobaire, I realize that you and I may be different sizes -- is your kilt a one-size-fits-all kind of garment?

Ah no, I'm afraid not. And the PC jacket is a size 50.

I think it's cool that you are doing this.

I like your user name too.

In my experience ( pretty much limited to Texas ) the big donor charity crowd will not be as concerned with your dress as much as they will with the performance. What you've described will be just fine.

Are you in Texas by any chance?

The big donor charity crowd will only care about how close they are seated to the talent and how much recognition and fawning they will get for the donation.

Exactly, he can wear a JC Penny suit and they would be happy. But you go and get them Kohan and look your best.

I was at an event Wednesday that some incredibly wealthy people were at. Some were dressed incredibly well and some were dressed worse than me ( which is pretty bad ).

Thanks rnoldh, I appreciate that. I'm actually in St. Louis, MO, though you have some of the country's most absurdly-talented collegiate musicians in your state. You wouldn't happen to be anywhere the University of North Texas, would you? Because their jazz program is nothing short of astonishing.

Thanks anyway, Piobaire, but I'm a 40L. I am, however, going thrifting this weekend, so I'll keep an eye out!

I'm pretty much settled on attire at this point: wool charcoal trousers + vest + jacket, white oxford shirt, green and blue striped bowtie, black captoes and white pocket square. Will post if I can get my camera to work!

Thanks very much all, wish me luck.

All the best,

Kohan
