Hardcover. I have a library and they look better on the shelf and stand up to more wear. But then again I prefer to buy editions with some history on them, which typically means a hardcover. Do you plan to go to law school? ~ H

I also like to buy older books. Currently, no plans to attend law school

Whichever is cheaper at the time I choose to purchase.

Paperback for books I read. I highlight and parenthesize novels and have no intention of displaying them for cocktail party fodder.

Paperbacks are only a last resort for me. I hate them and the fact that they've become the standard for all printing but the first fun. I would rather have a used hardcover than a new paperback.

I actually enjoy reading paperback books more because they are easier to handle because the cover bends with my hand (especially when flipping through the book). For collecting purposes, I prefer hardback books. In the end, I buy whatever is convenient, but I prefer hardback.

+1. I don't like the look of paperbacks in my book case.

I love the artwork on hardcovers from the 70s and 80s. Rather austere. It almost seems charmingly dated. For example, I just bought a first edition of this:

Hardcover FTW.

Not only do they look better on a bookcase, they seem as if they can withstand more wear-and-tear.
