This was created using 3,000 different photographs of the galaxy, along with mathematical models. Absolutely amazing. http://www.space.com/php/multimedia/...Axel+Mellinger

that's cool. I have more of an appreciation after taking astro 101 and learning just how big the milky way is.

Did the professor try to express the size of the Milky Way by flailing his arms and running running around the room?

God I wish.

P.S to Conne, my Astro professor is notorious for wearing a bowtie every single day.

Few of my favorite astronomy pics. They get better the more physics you understand. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubble_Ultra_Deep_Field Read a bit of the article (especially about just how small the patch of sky that that is taken over is and the fact that every patch of light in that picture is a galaxy) then ponder the perspective for a little. Mind will be blown. Baby picture of the universe taken using tiny (and i do mean fucking tiny, as in fractions of thousandths of a degree) temperature variations in a fuzzy microwave radiation that permeate the whole sky.

Space is the place. Never been there though.

"A parsec is a unit of length that equates to 19 million million miles, or 3.26 light years. Many galaxies are 100,000 parsecs in diameter. There are somewhere around 100 billion galaxies."

This God character uses a very well developed color palette.

So much so that most of those images have to use false-color for stuff outside our visual spectrum

It's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs.
