ok, I need some new socks, my socks are about 5 years old, and are starting to fade. I have been wearing gold toe cotton mid calf socks in black. I have maybe 15 pair of identical socks, it makes my life easier. I wear them with everything - but essentially that means dark wool suits, khakis and shirts, and to the gym.

I want to replace them. I will keep the old ones for the gym. I would like to get 15-20 pair of identical dark gray socks. while I like the gold toe, I want something a little nicer. I expect at least 5 years use out of them.

so, I have two ideas

1. http://www.landsend.com/pp/MerinoWoo...3&origin=index

they are a little thick. my wife doesn't like them.

2. http://eshop.viccel.com/

these are a little thin, but a lot cheaper, and a lot more formal looking.

what do you think? any other suggestions?

I've heard really good things about Pantherella socks for dressy occasions. As for an all-around sock, I think the lands end ones would do just fine. A bit thick, perhaps, but the cotton is nice.

I would like to say that Viccel Socks had started thicker socks for winter as mid calf and over the calf too .

I've purchased one pair of viccel (OTC black), but haven't received it yet... I'll post an update afterwards.

I'm hoping it works out. It would make my life easier.

I was in a similar position, and bought a few different pairs of socks from Tabio, a Japanese firm that was plugged in a Financial Times column. Upon receipt, I did not like them, however the regular ribbed sock (http://www.tabio.com/uk/detail/ribbe...ium_25505.html) became my favorite after several washings at home and by hotel laundries. I also tried the Brooks Brothers cotton ribbed crew socks, made in Italy, and would say these are great if one is traveling to tropical places.

Cut to now: Tabio is discontinuing the regular ribbed sock, which they said was extrememly popular. Supposedly a similar product will be on offer next year, first in Japan, then the UK. Disappointing. This is where all the ex-GM managers must have landed.
