Anyone know how the police hiring-process polygraph test works?

meh, Polygraphs are bullshit. If you believe they are going to work they will, but if you believe they are bullshit then you're golden. And like someone else said, its more about the guy asking you the questions than anything.

Penn & Teller did an awesome show on polys.

Then it's not really stealing, now is it? You could just as easily have been borrowing it, valet parking it, or just playing a funny practical joke on the owner!!!

Remember what George told Jerry on the classic Seinfeld episode about lie detectors "It's not a lie if you believe it"

Not quite. Contrary to what you've seen in movies or on tv, they are quite an effective tool and thinking they are bullshit will not help you pass....thats laughable.

They are not admissible in any court anyway. But of course they can take your answers and begin an investigation if they become suspicious. Just as they can begin an investigation based on any other inadmissible evidence, like hearsay. If they then turn up evidence that is admissible that you did commit the crime, they can try to convict you with that.

Not that glamorous unfortunately. Non-law enforcement position with the NSA.

Sworn law enforcement has always been an interest of mine, just have to decide whether the significant pay cut is worth it. Cops don't get payed dick

I don't think that you will find anybody you know, who hasn't trained at beating a polygraph, who can walk into a test and beat it. and I would say that 90% of people who wanted to try to train at it wouldn't be able to.

so, yes, it is beatable. to suggest that you can walk in and will yourself to beat it is extremly optimistic and unrealistic.

seriously - how many of you guys who are voicing opinions have actually taken a polygraph? how many of you have witnessed a few polygraphs?

By "training," do you simply mean believing your lies, or other tactics such as the thumb tac in your shoe? Seems like simply believing your lies would work, as in " I never stole the car" and actually believing that yourself

Haha, it's a question, not a statement. I'm asking if that is the trick to fooling the, or something else.

I've considered LE and after doing some research into different local LE departments, some get paid quite well.

It just seems to be dependent on where one goes.

Near me, Philadelphia / NYC gets paid in the low to mid $30's while surrounding areas start around $60k. A couple of guys that I work out with are local cops and with minimal OT they're making in the low $70k.

Low $30's? Gosh, seems awful low. I've done ride-alongs and research here in SoCal, and PD seem to start at mid $40's base pay, but usually end up at least at mid $50's due to overtime, etc. That's just first year. CHP made about $10K more, plus the retirement plan for all PD is great.

Personally, all the cops I know are doing just fine money wise. Most say the beaurocracy is the hardest part to get over, none mentioned low pay. A sheriff I know is in his mid 50's, and making $170K in retirement per year.
