What did you say, or how did you react? something similar happened to me and I didn't even say anything, I simply took my boots off and this person saw the tag and called me pretentious. Why the hell was he looking at the tag in your boots? Sounds a little insecure/jealous to begin with. Svenn's answer is pretty much right.... I used to get embarrassed because my parents always order white zinfandel at restaurants, and I finally realized it's the greatest thing in the world. They don't really like wine, and they don't feel a need to order expensive wine they don't like just to impress anybody. I see the same thing with people who don't like mushrooms going out of their way to order something with Truffles (the most mushroomy tasting mushrooms in the world!)

Those two things are not synonyms.... I am definitely snooty... but I try not to be pretentious (I'm sure there's a little pretense in all of us... there are very few Howard Roarks out there).

Due to my low english level seems that I´m proud to say that I am not a pedant here ( another synonym I´m called sometimes ) as I didn´t understood snooty and That Howard man. Never heard of him. Wow I am not pretencious this time!
