Where to buy shorter button down shirts?

I haven't had much luck finding a button down shirt from J. Crew/Theory/Armani Exchange/Banana Republic that offers a slightly shorter length (I'm 5'9). Most of the button down shirts from mall stores seem to range from 30-32 inches in length (for size Medium/larges).

To pull off the untucked button down shirt look for someone of my stature, are there any websites/stores that carry mediums/larges that are about 26-28 inches in length and 22-23 armpit to armpit?

A size small would probably fit me lengthwise with these brands, but would be way too tight in the chest/arms.

I tried taking a few shirts to the tailor for shortening, but none of them came out looking normal. My budget is less than a $100 per shirt...argh it looks like my only option would be to go MTM (risky since you can't return the shirt if it doesn't fit)

I've been looking too. H&M are shorter. Quality can vary from mediocre to abortive shirt to shirt though. Rugby is an ok option too. I usually buy $50-70 shirts and for $10 tailor them to perfection.

Just go with MtM. Never tried it myself though.

How do the Rugby oxfords fit in comparison to PRL custom-fits?

I know that there was already a consensus established in another thread that Rugbys were a little slimmer than PRL yet still longer than BoO. Just wondering if I can get your take

^^Sorry I'm unfamiliar with the RL custom fit cut, don't wear much of their stuff. I do prefer the Rugby and H&M cuts to BoO, BoO looks like an apron front to me.

find a cheap tailor. mine is a little mexican woman in the barrio that will do it for $10. her quality is impeccable. she shortened sleeves on a jacket for me better than nordstrom's in house people. she is indisposable in my mind. thank you senora marfiel.

Polo custom fit, at least the dress shirts, aren't designed for the untucked look. They have fairly long tails. The waist on the shirts are slimmed but then widens back out at the hip quite a bit. Looks like a skirt untucked.

Agreed. I'm the same height and sometimes shirts fit me slightly long... it's quite easy to have them shorten a shirt for no more than $10, and they always turn out great for me. It's not hard for tailors to slim out bodies and sleeves too if they are fitting slightly big - you'd be surprised what a difference it makes. If you want to stay around the $100 range, scoop up some shirts that are on sale and dial them in with a tailor. I think it can be done.

In my experience, the difference in length between a Rugby oxford in size large and a custom fit Ralph Lauren oxford in the same size is essentially negligible. Though I can wear both Rugby and Ralph Lauren (classic and custom fit) shirts untucked without it looking like a "skirt," perhaps that is made easier because of my 5'11" height.

Yup, it's a relatively easy job. Much easier than taking in the sides or shortening the sleeves. If your tailor can't even do this basic job, I wouldn't trust her to do something else. Find a different tailor.

i've also been looking for shirts with a shorter length. i've had good luck with the APC and Dries Van Noten shirts i've got. but still, they're not easy to find. next time i do a big Jantzen run, i'm going to have them shorten a few of the shirts so that i can wear them untucked.
