It's all numbers. Count your calories....every last one. Eat 400-600 calories less than you burn in an entire day, every day. Work out your daily caloric requirements here http://www.exrx.net/Calculators/CalRequire.html. Keep it healthy, space out small meals across short intervals to keep yourself full and energised. An ideal way to look at your daily caloric intake would be 40% of your daily calories made up of protein, 40% from carbohydrates and 20% from fat. Aim to lose 1-2lbs a week. Only weigh yourself once a week, at the same time e.g. when you wake up. The numbers don't lie.

I'd say just keep a really balanced diet...

Instead of say... cutting out something completely, just consume it in moderation. If you work out, eat 6-8 small meals a day would improve your metabolism without adding weight as long as you don't overconsume.

Reducing carb is probably the fastest way to lose weight initially, but a lean diet will allow you to continue to lose weight over time, so take your pick.
