Need some serious help with my career/education path

First of all, I am a high school senior entering the regular decision application season. Right now I really cannot make up my mind about what I want to study. What I do know is I want it to be art or fashion related. Art Direction sounds kind of cool but I have no idea what an art director does. I hear that title everywhere, from fashion houses, to magazines, to stores radio shows. I would like to know more about what they do and what I need to study. I am not having much luck on the Google. My AP Art concentration is "designing attractiveness." What I do is I use natural elements of what of the material I am sculpting with to guide where I am going to direct my piece. for example you have a block of clay and you take the gaps and cracks in the black and keep bending and widening them until you have a large flowing form that works out to be a perfect piece, well at least once it has proper lighting. I'll post pictures of this process so it makes more sense at another time. I really like sculpture and working with my hands. When I was little and up until 7th grade to be honest I loved playing with Legos. I built an entire Lego city in a room in my house, complete with street lighting and underneath I built a fake drainage system. Yeah it paid off I got in their magazine and went into contests. I love carving things and i cannot help but take a some clay or some wood and carve and manipulate with a pocket knife during bordum or free time. To me it is extremely therapeutic and calming feeling to me, and it requires me to focus well since I cannot really reverse a mistake at times. Sure I would love to be a sculpture for a living and I think I would be very happy if it could pay the bills and get me some local recognition, wherever I am based. I am thinking about product/accessory design. Someone has to design the belts (buckles are a form of sculpture), jewelry, etc for fashion/brands. I do have jewelry experience, I am a design intern (I design and create jewelry myself) as well as sell jewelry with my boss. I think if I went to a place like FIT, accessory design, which includes jewelry may be a good route for me. The schools on my list are: Parsons, SUNY Purchase, FIT, SVA, Pratt, CW Post (safe-backup), and Queens (safe-backup). In terms of my chances with the art schools, well I don't know my chances because my art teachers just always happen to get distracted when I ask them. I am a member of the National Art Honor Society and two year member of Art Service Club, and I am working on a charity art auction for AIDS-care/meds funding. My GPA is a 85.5, and my SAT scores are well....so bad, like embarrassing. I tried hard twice but its just not my test. I took the ACT, waiting for those scores but I not hopeful. I hate to use this as a tool but I am latino and a first generation American with a unique childhood and traits. Sure everyone says that but my childhood and how I was raised was pretty unmatchable to most other Long Islanders, or even more Americans. So could you guys give me some friendly guidance and try and help guide me into figuring out what I might be best suited for. Thanks, I just really need some help right now, it is so stressful.

I can't give you any advice specific to the fields you are looking at - apart from wanting to design lego professionally when I was little (and still sort of wanting it now) I don't have any experience in them.

I will say that I am in a not dissimilar situation and I have found it helpful to find people who are in the various fields I am interested in and asked them what their job is like, what they did to get there, and what they would recommend to someone interested in doing what they do. People tend to like talking about themselves, so if you can find someone who will talk to you getting the required information is not hard.

I'll wait for someone who has actually done it to weigh in on what it entails on a daily basis, but art direction is a cool career that I might have done if I could have gotten into art school. It's a common path for someone in commercial art/graphic design to take if they want to get into a more senior, managerial role. As far as I know you can't just start off in art direction, you have to start as a designer or some other entry-level type.

Actually, I bet kunk would know a lot about it.

I think you're kind of on the right path. You have your arts background, you know what makes you happy as an artist, now look for a program that will help you apply yourself professionally as well?

Your just a kid. In all probability you will end up hating what you want to do right now in 10 years... Just take your basic classes, and then pick a major. Sounds like you really are confused if you want us to find what "suits" you. Wait a couple of a years, and then maybe you will now what suits YOU.

The issue is they all start freshman year and if you switch it means a 5th year tacked on to getting your BFA or other specialized Bachelors.

I am not asking for someone to pick my career, possibly ask me certain questions that could lead me away from some things or into others.

If you're already going to art school, you will probably get a good versatile skill set in your first year. From what I know of art schools up here, the only decision is, do you want to be an artist (crazy; live in a log cabin; when you sell, sell for lots of money, but don't always sell) or do you want to be in the business side. I would think everything else will come with time, automatically, and you will be able to jump around within either of those two (but not so much between). This is coming from someone who wanted to be a graphic designer at one point almost a decade back but is now employed in a totally different industry, so caveat you.
