Homosexuality. Nature, nurture, or choice?

Homosexuality. Is it nature, nurture or choice? The science of epigenetics is shedding light on this much misunderstood area ; sexual preference. Homosexuality has now been observed in well over 1,000 species and has been well documented in around 500. Species such as humans, bonobos, chimps, dolphins, lions, bison, elephants, sheep, hyenas, swans, penguins, vultures, gulls, fruit flies, dragonfies and lizards all have shown examples of homosexual behaviour. The concept of homosexuality being "unnatural" is definitely outdated and uninformed. Disgraceful examples of discrimination continue to occur not only in various social situations but also in workplaces, legislation and of course religious institutions. Despite the trumpeting of successes in the marketing materials of the "ex-gay" ministries, they do not stand up to the scrutiny of independent analysis with success rates dramatically skewed by participants either dropping out or simply supressing who they really are. When someone says that homosexuality is "unnatural," that's not what they mean.

Enlighten us, then. People say homosexuality is unnatural as in you can't reproduce. But that's assuming the purpose of every biological organism's life is reproduction. Isn't that what people mean when they say that?

You're assuming too much to think any biological organism has "a purpose." However, the ability to reproduce is usually included in definitions of what constitutes a living entity.

Homosexuals have the ability to reproduce. Just not through homosexual sex.

Did I say they did not?

NEXT!

If you pulled your head out of your ass, you'd also state the post-menopause women do not, ergo under the usual "unnatural" argument, it would be immoral if they had sex, making that line of argumentation pretty lame.

Think before you react.

P.S. That was an example, not an exhaustive list. I'm aware sterile individuals can't breed either.

I don't think that's natural for him.

For some reason, I feel obliged to post on any thread that ostensibly deals with gheyz or gheydom. So, consider my pink duty done. Anyway, if you need me, I'll be on teh Gore Vidal hooker threak.

Is this a DT? Assuming no, there are a few interesting evolutionary explanations for why homosexuality might be adaptive.

Personally, with no hard data to back up this opinion, I think it's a bi-conditional. (No, that's not a pun).

Sorry, do you mean poly-adaptive?

I just have this sneaking suspicion there is a genetic component and an environmental/social component. That basically, you have the genetic predisposition, but it will remain latent in lieu of the needed environmental/social stimuli.

I have zero proof; this is 100% a personal hunch.
