Interesting. Have you seen the film 'Altered States'? I think both you and oman would be interested in it.

I'd have loved to be a shaman, and taken spiritual journeys into the desert, consuming peyote and mushrooms and having visions and prophecies.

I was just thinking about that movie while reading this thread. I won't tell you how it ends, but if you watch it, you'll know why I hate the ending.

I always wanted to try a deprivation tank after watching that.

Yeah, the deprivation tank seems like a cool concept.

I agree with you that I enjoyed the first 1/2 (or 2/3) of the movie a lot more than the ending - went over the top a bit. But still, good movie overall, explores some great ideas.

Semi-related, I meant to post this earlier: I read about a wristwatch that will supposedly wake you up at the best point of your sleep cycles. Somehow it monitors your sleep movements and will choose the best point within a range of time (say, 6:00 to 6:30) to wake you up, when you are closest to being awake anyway. Apparently it is supposed to wake you up more refreshed.

Found it: http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/review/sleeptracker_watch

I've experimented with about 15 different psychedelics. Probably tripped about 40 times. I have only ever had 2 bad trips, one on DPT and one on salvia.

Regaurding my salvia experiences, I smoked salvia probably about 10 times. It was never what I would call pleasent, but it was never really that bad until the last time. The trick is you need to just keep doing bong rips about as fast as you can until you can't hold the bong (you NEED a trip sitter there, dont try it without one).

When I finally "broke through" (the last time I did it) I really wasnt prepared (already on other drugs, in vegas, TV on...) because I had smoked it so many times with no large effects. Needless to say, it was the most terrifying 10 minutes of my life. I will never ever touch this stuff again. I could spend hours explaining the experience, but lets just say that I wasnt a human consciousness, had no idea what planet I was on, there was no such thing as matter, and I basically felt fully helpless and insane. Any and all constructs of prior though and reality vanished. Sounds like fun, but trust me it wont be unless you are VERY prepared for such a situation.

I've read alot of similar stuff. I'm not looking for fun though; I want to explore the bounds of conciousness. I've heard that having the right attitude it a big part of avoiding a bad trip.

Right attitude, respect for the drugs powers, and building up to it will all help. If you have experience with high dose shroom, dmt, dpt trips then chances are you will fare much better. Its impossible to describe what it feels like if you havent been there. Problem with salvia when compared to, say, dmt is that salvia tends to have a malevolent push. It felt like it wanted me to have a bad time...

Second the "malevolent push" of salvia. I've only had two bad trips ever in my storied career. Once tripping alone on LSD and once on salvia divinorum. The former is easily accounted for, very tiny, dirty, critter infested apartment in a terrible neighborhood----in short bad setting. The latter, I blame the drug entirely.

On a side note, Lucid dreaming is cool.

I started to document dreams and look into the meaning behind them.

Before I would go to sleep, I would tell myself I was going to remember my dreams. I kept a notebook and pen by the bed and (surprise) I always woke up at the end of my dreams and recorded them. It was hard at first but got easy very quickly.

The dreams were always reflective of my life at that moment.

So I had a lucid dream session last night. These past few weeks I have been constantly questioning myself "am I dreaming?" as suggested in this thread.

In my dream last night, my buddy and I were making chocolates out of Psilocybe Cubensis mushrooms. We ate the chocolates and I started to trip, but then I realized it was a dream. I managed to manipulate myself pretty well in the dream - I pinched my nose and when I was still able to breathe I knew it was a dream.

At first I had a hard time guiding my dream. I'd get a little progress, but realize it was a dream and wouldn't be able to do whatever I wanted.

Eveuntually I found a trick. I told myself I was on some sort of hallucinogen, and focused my brain to try and turn objects into other things (like you can do while tripping). I began to realize that I really could do everything I wanted. I can't remember everything I did, but one of the things was playing a sort of Grand Theft Auto scenario in a downtown area with some friends. I remember putting my hands out as if I was holding a rifle, then concentrating really hard and imagining what it should look like, and a shotgun appeared. I ran around playing a real-life version of the game...pretty cool.

I should really write the dreams down when I wake up. I can't wait to try it again tonight.

whoa, sounds sweet, versace

how long did you have to ask yourself whether you've been dreaming? i still have had no luck, and it's been a little while

and yeah, practicing this REQUIRES a dream journal

Two weeks, about.

My dreams have always been very vivid in the past, and left a big impact on me for the rest of the day. I was able to control them slightly, but not to the extent that I am able to now.

one thing that concerns me is that it may end up being jsut a stupid waste of time

i mean, all the literature i read about this stuff says that it helps to "unlock your potential" but i don't know if that's leary-like pseudoscience

although the mind IS an incredibly powerful thing, does lucid dreaming help at all in the waking world?

i guess maybe leaving a "big impact" is sort of helpful, if it elevates the mood or whatever

Get it working and find out. It really is amazing how it can change your outlook on your waking life. I've read about people using their dream time to practice real life skills and having, if nothing else, more confidence when it came time. The specific example I'm thinking of is of a concert musician, a violinist or cellist I think, who visualized himself performing solo, perfectly, in front of a packed house at Carnegie Hall. He reported improvement in his waking performance.

Anyway, it doesn't hurt to try. I don't think it really requires an inordinate amount of effort (no more than devout prayer.. ) and it's not like it cuts into your time to do other things, right?
