In my opinion and experience, certain bands and performers are inevitable signifiers of good musical taste. People who are fans of these things usually always have good taste in music. This is the equivalent of someone who was classically trained forming rock/punk bands, or conversely, people with heavy metal backgrounds forming pop-ish rock bands such as Weezer. The results are usually quite satisfactory. Good: Roxy Music The Fall Sparks Swell Maps Pere Ubu Little Richard Certain punk bands. Esquerita Felt Yellow Magic Orchestra Television Bad: Creed Any American Idol Coldplay Almost any contemporary Top 10. and etc. Irredeemable: Insane Clown Posse This: Britney Spears and the like can be appreciated for perversity.

I like Roxy Music and Little Richard. LK, what about our friend Jerry Lee Lewis?

I would also add some of the great ladies of jazz/soul: Nina Simone, Bettye LaVette, Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Horn, etc.

I think the predictors of poor taste are much more reliable than those for good taste. That is, bands like, say, Creed are a much better predictor of poor taste than a decent band is of good taste.

The Smiths
Bauhaus/Love and Rockets/Tones on Tail
Nick Cave/Birthday Party
Joy Division
Buzzcocks
The Jam

anything in the 50s RnB/rock n roll or 60s Beat/Soul genres

I find fans of the above generally have good taste in everything (altho there are plenty of Smiths fans who dont)

true, but there's a difference between actually liking a band and just saying you do because they're "in". it's like what MrG said.

But generally, when you want to like something for whatever reason, you end up liking it, and so the line between the people who genuinely like the music and the poseurs blur. A lot of music appreciation is just being open-minded enough to give it a chance.
