Can we please get rid of: afton920 He is a fairly sophisticated spammer, and people are replying to his threads as if they are real.

I reported him yesterday.

Sorry, I've been kind of away from the computer since last Friday, so a lot of spam has gone unpunished. I'm getting on it right now. I'd feel better about deputizing more spaminators except that the spaminator has no undo function and it's a serious pain to fix it if someone gets unfairly spaminated. I'll see if there's something we can do though.

Glad you're willing to consider it. Best would be if two deputies had to spaminate something for it to be gone, but that would require a sophisticated mod I think, and a lot of deputies. Alternatively just keep deputies to a minimum but ensure they understand what they can spaminate. It should really only be posts from very new posters where the sig is a link, there is either poor English or just no relevance to SF (Nike Shoes for example), and the details regarding clothing sizes are the first option in each case.

That first alternative seems like a logistical nightmare. Actually, we have mod who is supposed to be the spamminator, but he has been falling down on the job. Ahem. Also, the spam is getting ridiculous. J and I are the main guys on the job right now, and really, there is a lot of spam to go through. Part of our problem is that the forum has been active for so long that several of our moderators are essentially emeritus due to a variety of reasons.

One idea might be to deputize several trusted members who have the ability to only spamminate members with under, say, 25 posts. The deputies would be charged with going through the "newest members" list, say, when they get up, and check the posts from these new members. Most of the spam is pretty obvious, and the deputies could leave the tough cases to the regular moderator team.

I'm for giving Artisan Fan and Teger full moderation powers in CE. We should be rid of the entire thing in about 36 hours.

we have to be careful when it comes to deputising people on spam only duty.

My original mod role was 'overnight spam killer' - cos so much of it was appearing While America Sleeps. I still do a lot of that. At that stage I had no other modding powers, just a spam button, however it did have a couple of side effects.

First was instant squirrel access - which I am not sure we want to open to more people than we have to.

The second is that those deputised will get a zillion and three emails a day with all the reported posts. A zillion of those will just be reported spam and reported FS bumps, the other three may well be issues that other members do not necessarily want made known to but-a-select-few.

Things to consider.....

Plus, we don't trust any of you guys

Maybe we should have try-outs, reality show style. "Who wants to be an SF mod?"

I'll do it. I already moderate the other board I post on, and it's a hell of a lot worse than this one in terms of crap that needs to be cleaned up, CE notwithstanding.

I'm in Oz and can tackle the spam that originates while the rest of the world sleeps. Not like I do anything at work anyway ...

The speading the job round the globe to cover different timezones is a good idea.

How did Attwater get to 75 spam posts

I presume the 60 secs between emails rule is to prevent abuse, but it does make reporting spam difficult...

he's gone

Sounds like you need somebody who lives on the other side of the world...
