New Amsterdam Gin, Please Rate

My roommate gave me a bottle of gin for my birthday. It was a fifth of New Amsterdam. I'm wondering where that ranks on a scale of one to premium. Could you give me a few brands/varieties by one brand in either direction?

I'm not looking to gauge the quality of his present; rather, I'm trying to figure out what the heck I'm drinking. It's my first sip of gin, see!

Best,

It is one of the lower priced gins. I don't say this to diminish your roommate's gesture (anyone who gives a bottle of gin is doing his part to keep our world level) but if you dislike the gin, don't let it taint your taste for the spirit. It might have a more bitter taste than a more expensive gin. I'm not sure what else ranks on its level (Seagrams?) but spending a few more dollars will get you to Bombay Dry or Sapphire. Same pricepoint as Tanqueray and I'm fiercely loyal to Bombay so I'll recommend that. Those are the mid-higher priced gins that demonstrate the spirit.

Bombay Sapphire is the one that comes in the (gasp) sapphire glass container, label has green and blue on it? Never mind, I don't remember the label colours but I know what you're talking about. It's good that not all gins taste this way, ha, because New Amsterdam tastes like orange-flavored vodka, of which I'm not a fan. The second fruity tastes are introduced into anything hard, I lose interest.
