vintage soul music appreciation thread - Page 9

...excellent footage, as rare as hens teeth! Some would refer to that as British Soul, of course PP Arnold (on backing vox) was in the Ikettes prior to that so a bona-fide US soulstress!

One of my all-time favourite British/Blue Eyed Soul tracks is Timebox 'Beggin' by far the best version of this song IMO...

Another NS favourite from the States (NY) this time... Tony Galla 'In Love' great track...

Love that Timebox track. And the Small Faces are always the shit, but definitely Blue Eyed Soul.

Not so rare, but nice Motown track: Wouldn't it have been fun to see them perform together? Crap sound, but gotta check the dancing. Supremes and Temptations "Losing You" on Ed Sullivan in '67 technicolor.

^^^ Detroit Cobras did an excellent cover of that one. The original remains superior, however.

Sly & The Family Stone - "Underdog" Later covered by the Dirtbombs. I'm on the fence as to which version is better. Edit - NVM, Sly version is still the best. Barry White - "Playing Your Game, Baby" Excellent all-around track. The opening horn and bass line was sampled and looped for Black Moon's "I Got Cha Opin (remix)." The Ambassadors - "Ain't Got The Love Of One Girl (On My Mind) Primal... brutal... savage lyrics, harmonies, and rhythm section. Later sampled by Pete Rock for "I Got a Love." Edit - I just noticed mordecai already posted this one. Apologies for this and any other reposts.

Chi Lites - "Stoned Out Of My Mind." Back when I drove a triple cream 1978 Cadillac DeVille (Ahh... c'mon baby. You know its got a few years, but it's a cream puff.) this was my go-to song to blast on the 8-track during a sunny Sunday afternoon drive... Later sampled by Slick Rick on "Bond"

...and covered superbly by Brit Mod/soul band The Action which the DC's version owes a lot too IMO. And funnily enough the DC's also covered Mickey Lee-Lane's 'Hey Sah-Lo-Ney' (as 'Hey Sailor') which was also covered by The Action...

Agreed, the Dirtbombs are nice fellas though and a great band.

From Sly & FS 1st LP this proto-funkadelic-psych-soul killer..

Also covered quite well by the Jam on the b-side of their last single (though judging by your user name I assume you'd already know this...unless that's your real name !!).
