Need new laptop (mac)

I will likely need a new mac laptop. Which one should I get. Don't ask me what I need or what I want it for. I have decent reason to want the macbook air, and a reason to want the 17" and a reason to want the macbook. In other words, each model has pros and cons that do matter, but that leaves me with nothing with which to make a choice. So give me the reason that sings; the reason why X is really the model to get.
Please.

what are you planning to use it for?

It's simple:
Is price an issue? Then get the macbook. If not, get the 17" macbook pro.
Is portability an issue? Then it doesn't matter as they're all pretty portable, even the 17" pro.
Is power an issue? Then get the 17" pro and upgrade it to what you need.
Do you want something less costly than the pro, but extra sexy? Macbook Air is for you.

Of course, since we're not allowed to know what you're going to do with them, I'm going to assume it's "looking at porn 11 hours a day." Then you'll want the biggest screen for sure.

Definitely get the MacBook Air. It's a laptop, not a shleptop. The 17" is for people who can't decide whether they want a desktop or a laptop, and end up getting the worse of both. And while the MBA fits into a nice bag, the 17" requires some dorky computer-transportation device.

Good response. It doesn't give me an answer, but does give me a way to look at it.

Good response. This will replace a 17" macbook pro, so I already have a bag for it. A nice WaterField Designs bag: But I wouldn't mind being able to use a smaller bag. BTW, I only carry this when traveling out of town. Otherwise, it will be used at home as my main or supplemental computer (have a desktop as well).

I'm not talking to you.

It's difficult to recommend one without knowing what you want to do with it. But this is how I see them:

17-inch MBP: big, powerful, heavy, expensive, nice display. It's portable, but not too convenient because it's big. People I know who use it work on the train ride with a broadband connection working on CAD, so they have space and need for what it gives them. I'd get the matte display.

MBA: light, slow, kind of expensive. If you don't have terribly demanding needs (you check email, surf the web, and use MS Office), then this would be fine, but personally at this point, I'd rather just take my iPhone.

MB: cheapest of the 3, not really that much lighter than the MBP, small display, small size. For me, I'd get this if it was mostly a laptop I'd use with a monitor at a desk with occasional light uses when moving around.

Personally, I'd either get a slow 15-inch MBP (what I did), which is a good compromise between size and power now, or wait until January and get the Nehalem-based laptops, assuming you need the computing power.

I also like big screens, and find 13-inch screens pretty uncomfortable.

I'm willing to accept this as an appropriate response. General purpose - Pro 15". The 17" is too big and the 13" is a middle of the road type. Plus, on the 15" you can get the anti-glare coating which more than makes up for the price difference. The Air is an underpowered piece of shit. If you need a travel computer, save yourself $1k and get a netbook. It'll do everything the Air will do and be practically as light.

My wife had a macbook until our daughter spilled rice milk in it. I agree that a 13" screen is too small. She loves that size, though, because she like the neatness of one window at a time. If I can wait until January, maybe I will take your advice. It depends on whether my current 17" is dead or just having a really long nap.

ok. Now I'll talk to you. When I need a laptop, which is five to ten days a month, it is as my sole computer while on the road, i.e., in hotel or conference rooms. I would also use it at home, when I feel like using a computer in the dining room or on the couch or wherever. But I have a desktop at home and we also have some other laptops floating around.

Hmm. I'd definitely spring for the 15 with the anti-glare and extra 2" real estate. I'd also second AY's advice but with the caveat that Apple is not always timely with their updates. It could be January or it could be April when they decide to include the new Lightpeak tech that they've been developing.

Have you introduced her to the wonders of Expose? F10 or F11 (I forget which because I usually chord them to get Expose and Spaces).

It is really a way of thinking. For example, she deletes emails after she reads them because they take up too much space.

....

It turns out my laptop was just taking a long nap, but it is awake now. So the purchase decision has been deferred.
