Are there any good studies comparing caloric intake and dietary patterns of countries

I mean we all know the basics, but are there any detailed studies?

For example, I would love to see the exact break down of US vs French vs Scandinavian vs Japanese diet, caloric intake, popular foods, etc. But more than just that of course.

I've only ever seen BMI comparisons, and they're largely pointless data.

Not exactly what you are looking for, but a couple of years ago a group from Penn compared serving sizes at restaraunts in Philly and Paris, and they found that portion sizes are 25% smaller in France. Here are a couple of links regarding the study, it's pretty interesting.

The actual studies themselves are rather drab but if you're really interested you can probably find them under the science databases Medline and PubMed. There's plenty of studies, just use the advanced search feature.

Looking for something like Ancel Keys' Seven Countries study?

From a nutri. sci. class in college I learned the most indicitive factor of BMI (heart disease?) was type of fat ingested, not the amount. Lowest BMI (heart disease?) countries= Japan (fish fat) and Mediterranean countries (olive oil) Highest BMI (heart disease?)= America (beef fat, butter) Edit: it occurred to me that it was heart disease not BMI, I think. Right, rather dry plus they typically group the data into pools like western, mediterranean, asian, or industrialized, developing, etc. Exact breakdown for each country is probably in the database but won't be published so I don't know that you'll find what you're looking for. ENDB covers 10 European countries, might look at their reports.

Your professor might want to see what northern Italians and the French use.

Not to mention America eats an excessive 200 billion calories per day on top of healthy amounts, usually in the form of fatty foods.

I ordered a Coke in Italy and they served it to me in a shot glass.

Try to forget everything you 'learned' in that class.
