Basically to reinstall your OS without an optical drive you will have to image your old drive and transfer it to a new one. I use Acronis 2009 for my main PC's backups so I can use it to upgrade my 1000HE's hard drive when it comes time.

If you need to pull the trigger now, HP just released its 311 that has win7 and an ion chip. Personally, I'd wait until Black Friday/Christmas. By then the newer models will be out and you should be able to score one on sale.

ASUS or any other hardware is essentially a case with parts that retailers buy from the same manufacturers. almost no retailers left that produce their own hardware so it's just a matter of external appearance and tricks and trinkets. that being said, get one with linux preloaded (ubuntu for netbooks, for example)
