Netbook Question - Hows ASUS?

I want a netbook for traveling, mainly to emails and just web browsing. It will probably get a use of 2-3 days a month. I'll probably connect through wifi's on the hotels I'll be staying at so I don't need the netbooks/service cellphone companies offer. I was looking at ASUS and for $250, it doesn't seem bad at all. http://www.bestbuy.com/si...product&id=1218106121199 . Is that particular one any good? I also saw the MSI Wind Netbook with an Intel Atom Processor for $290-$300, is the processor worth the extra $40-$50? http://www.bestbuy.com/si...product&id=1218046803577 Any help or advice are appreciated. Asus is pretty much considered the top Netbook maker, and they're credited with creating the segment. They got Laptop magazine's top rating a couple of month's back.

Asus is great and has a great reputation. They have been building machines and internals for other brands for like ever.

I have EeePC 1000HA and love it.

My requirements were the Atom, larger HD, long life battery, and upgradeability. I got it for under $400 like 9 months ago.

SUS is probably the gold standard right now. I recommended one to Huntsman and he was pretty happy with it. Don't get anything smaller than an 11" screen. <10 is too ******* tiny.

Another vote for Asus. I have the 1000HE. It has the slightly (0.06GHz) faster Atom chip and a real-life 5 hour battery. I upgraded the RAM and will be upgrading the HDD soon. It comes with a built-in camera on the top of the screen so you can do VTCs via Skype (which comes pre-loaded on the netbook).

It works great with Windows XP for surfing the net and light word processing, which is all I really need on the road.

Mine also works great for watching downloaded movies/shows on the road. I almost get five hours of video out of it - great on a transatlantic.

If you need an optical drive you shouldn't be getting a Netbook.

The 1000HE is an outdated model. There are much newer offerings on the table

No, that's a different model.

This is the Asus 1000HE.

It has, as Rambo said, been superceded by a newer model, the Asus 1005HA-P. Note that there are three different flavors of the 1005HA so pay very careful attention to which one you buy.

Key differences between the two are price, keyboard, battery life and touchpad functionality.

Yeah, I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to technology and some people on other forums has stated that having no optical drive is a big deal to them but honestly, I have no idea how beneficial it is. They still try to encourage me to get a laptop, the Acer Aspire but for what I need it for, just checking emails and visiting several forums here in there on a trip, I think a netbook is what I need but I do not want to spend a huge amount to a point where I might as well get a laptop.

Since the 1000HE is an outdated model, would the one I posted, the 1005HA-P be a better deal?

Yup, as said Asus pretty much perfected the netbook. I'm typing this on my Asus 1000H which is about a year and half old and has become my everyday goto computer for all purposes. Love it and its easy to take everywhere.

Can it match ASUS' price point though? The ASUS I am looking at retails for $250-$300, does Samsung has any comparable netbook w/ similar or better capabilities for the same price?

Also, in the description it says it has 1gb of ram but expandable to 2gb, again I am somewhat illiterate when it comes to techs so would it cost extra to expand it to 2gb and would it improve performance if I do so. I probably won't do it once I get it but maybe int he future?
